Pickleball is the fastest growing sports in the United States. According to history, this sport was invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island by three dads who thought of creating a game for the whole family after seeing their kids’ boredom with their usual summer activities. They originally used Pickleball Paddles to create the game.
Pickleball’s name has two theories. First, it was said that the wife of Joel Pritchard, one of the inventors of the game, called it pickleball because it reminded her of the pickle boat where the oarsmen were picked from other boats’ leftover.
Second, according to the other inventor, Barney McCallum, it was officially named after the Pritchards’ dog, Pickles.
This sport is easy to learn and can be played by people of all ages. Pickleball is a combination of badminton, ping pong, and tennis. It is played inside a court which is similar to a badminton court while the net is like the height of a tennis net. Additionally, it uses a bigger version of a ping pong paddle along with a whiffle ball.
As easy as it sounds, you should still practice in improving your pickleball game to be able to make the game more fun and challenging. That said, here are some tips you want to follow:
Always Be in Ready Position
As with any other game, being in ready position is always the most important thing players do at the start of the game. This conditions their mind and body and lets them visualize the moves they’ll do during the game and be ready for the next shot.
In pickleball, always keep your feet and shoulder width apart and your knees bent slightly. The weight should be on the balls of your feet and not on your heels. You should also relax your upper body, and grip your paddle in a neutral continental way so you’ll be ready whatever smash trick your opponent will do.
Improve Your 3rd Shot
The 3rd shot is the serving team’s second shot and is like their transition shot. You should practice on your 3rd shot so you’ll have the advantage to transition slowly to the net in split steps until you approach the non-volley zone. According to pickleball experts, always remember these four tips in perfecting your 3rd shot strategy:
- Hit the ball up and over
- Practice hitting from a baseline
- Transition to the net using split step
- Have fun practicing
Get in Sync with Your Partner
In every game you’re playing with a partner, always remember to “play in tune” with your partner or else, everything will be a disaster. Just like in pickleball, always communicate with your partner and if possible, talk about some hand or gesture signals that would help you and your partner understand each other’s moves during the game. This way, you won’t overpower each other and both know who will play next and what’s the next strategy to take. This will make for a smooth and mess-free game.
Hope these few simple tips would help in improving your pickleball game strategy. Have fun playing!
