Palm Readings

December 1

  • Sorry - the column is a day late this week due to travel.

  • The coaching carousel is hot and heavy. Urban Meyer to Ohio St. Mike Leach to Washington St. Arizona St and UCLA are now open, although Rick Neuheisel will coach the Pac-12 title game (but not the bowl game).

  • UCLA got a waiver from the NCAA to appear in a bowl game if it loses to Oregon in the Pac-12 title game. The Bruins will be 6-7 if they lose. The Kraft Fight Hunger bowl would be the big loser there. And of course, some deserving, eligible team.

I am making changes to the bowl projection page as I hear things, so keep an eye on that. Most of the assignments will now have to wait for the BCS though.

  • Looking ahead a bit. If LSU wins as expected, there should be nothing standing between them and a rematch with Alabama for the BCS title. If LSU loses, I think Alabama has a problem. Right now, voters are happy to go along their merry ways and lead us to this matchup. If Georgia wins though, all of a sudden, they are creating a title game matchup between two teams from the same league, and neither won the league.

I think most people can grasp the concept that the two best teams in the country could be in the same division of the same league. I think it becomes a lot harder to sell that though if neither team actually won the league. So, if that happens, voters might rethink things and start looking for non-Alabama options.

The primary one would be Oklahoma St, if it wins Bedlam for a change. Virginia Tech could be a choice also, but the ACC doesn't get quite the same level of respect. Stanford is no different than Alabama - didn't win division, let alone conference. The Cowboys' current problem is that they are mired behind both Virginia Tech and Stanford in the polls.

And, I suppose, some might favor Georgia, the winner of the Almighty SEC. They would have to be willing to accept the Boise St loss. In 2001, Colorado was voted ahead of Nebraska in the final regular season poll despite an extra loss from non-conference play to Fresno St.

  • Interesting also is what happens if Houston loses? The Cougars, like Boise St, would not be able to qualify automatically because they would not be a conference champion. They might not even stay in the top 14 and be part of the at-large pool.

That could open the door for TCU, which is 18th this week. The Frogs, like Michigan, would have to move up two spots to be in position to automatically qualify. That's kind of iffy, but they might.

  • And of course, there is Michigan. The Wolverines also need to move up two places to get into the at-large pool. I think they will pass Georgia, the loser of the Big Ten title game, whichever team it is, and probably Oklahoma. There is a little concern about Baylor jumping them from behind if the Bears beat Texas, but I consider that unlikely. Clemson would have a better chance of making that jump if it beats Virginia Tech. Clemson does not have as good of a chance of actually winning its game as Baylor does though.

  • You know the season is nearing the end when you start to see some of those great rivalry games. Realignment has moved some of them to earlier in the season, but those still at the end get special treatment here.

Last week, I finished 21-2, with another hit on my upset special. I'm now 90-45 overall, 4-10 on the upset picks. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

Big East title? BJ Daniels remains questionable for the Bulls. They'll need him if they are going to pull this upset. The Big East is rooting hard for WVU. It would be nice for the league to have its highest rated team represent it in the BCS.
    *Cincinnati 24
    Connecticut 20
Big East title? A Bearcats win, combined with a WVU win on Thursday, puts the Mountaineers in the BCS. If West Virginia loses and Cinci wins, the Bearcats go. If Cincinnati loses, we get 7-5 Louisville.

    This Week in the BCS

    November 28

  • The chart is updated for this week. I will also update the bowl page as bids get announced.

Also, I guess I better get the coaching carousel fired up. Rob Ianello is out at Akron after just two years. Sheesh, even Akron has no patience.

    November 27, 9:30 PM

  • The official release is out. No surprises, which you would expect considering Arkansas was the only team in last week's top 16 to lose. I'm updating the chart as data becomes available.

  • There is a report out there suggesting Michigan only needs to be top 18 to be eligible since the Big Ten won't have more than one team in the top 14. You all probably know that is not true. Michigan has to be top 14 to get picked, just like anyone else.

    November 27, 6:30 PM

  • LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu had a 92-yard punt return for TD, forced two fumbles and recovered one in LSU's 41-17 win over Arkansas. LSU clinched the SEC West and will play Georgia for the league title. The Tigers will play for the BCS title for sure with a win, and likely even with a loss.

QB Aaron Murray threw four touchdown passes in Georgia's 31-17 win over Georgia Tech.

Trent Richardson made his final statement in the Heisman chase with 203 yards rushing in Alabama's 42-14 win over Auburn.

Mississippi St won the Egg Bowl 31-3 over Ole Miss. After the game, the Rebels fired Houston Nutt again. Yes, I know, that's not the first time I used that line. It will be the last though. That was, in fact, Nutt's final game as the Ole Miss coach.

Kentucky ended a 26-game losing streak to Tennessee with a 10-7 win, despite passing for only 15 yards in the game. Tennessee will miss a bowl as a result.

Florida only gave up 95 yards of offense to Florida St, but lost anyway 21-7. The Noles converted two interceptions into touchdown drives totaling 24 yards, then the defense returned a third pick for a score on its own.

  • Virginia Tech is in the ACC title game after throttling Virginia 38-0. The Hokies held UVa to 241 yards of total offense and turned them over four times.

Lots of coaches are getting fired today and will later this week, but Al Golden signed a four-year extension at Miami. The Canes celebrated with a 24-17 loss to BC.

  • Texas kicked a 42-yard FG on the final play to beat Texas A&M 27-25 in the last scheduled meeting between the two long-time rivals.

Mizzou beat Kansas 24-10 in final Border War, and also the final game for KU coach Turner Gill. He was fired on Sunday.

No RG3? No problem. Griffin suffered a concussion in the first half, but Baylor cruised to a 66-42 win over Texas Tech. Terrence Ganaway carried the ball 42 times for 246 yards and two scores. It was the Bears first win over Texas Tech as a member of the Big 12. Last week, Baylor picked up its first win ever over Oklahoma.

  • Denard Robinson had 336 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in Michigan's 40-34 win over Ohio St. It was Michigan's first win over the Buckeyes since 2003.

Wisconsin left no doubt who the best of the Leaders are. Montee Ball ran for 156 yards and four more touchdowns in a 45-7 rout of Penn St. The Badgers will face Michigan St, a 31-17 winner over Northwestern, for the inaugural B1G title next week.

Rex Burkhead had 160 yards rushing and a touchdown in Nebraska's 20-7 win over Iowa. Nebraska is likely headed to the Cap One bowl.

The Ron Zook era in Champaign came to a screeching halt after a 27-7 loss at Minnesota. Zook got the hook today.

Purdue is bowl eligible for the first time since 2007 with a 33-25 win at Indiana. IU was the only AQ-conference school this year to go winless against I-A opposition.

  • On Friday night, Utah missed a 48-yard FG as time expired, sealing a 17-14 loss to Colorado and giving the Pac-12 South title to UCLA.

For good measure, Arizona St lost also, 47-38 to Cal, meaning UCLA won the division outright. At least among eligible teams.

Speaking of eligible, UCLA won't be bowl-eligible if it loses to Oregon, so it's Rose Bowl or nothing for the Bruins.

Oregon treated archrival Oregon St rather uncivilly in a 49-21 whipping, which sent the Ducks into the Pac-12 title game as the North champion.

Andrew Luck had four TD passes in Stanford's 28-14 win over Notre Dame. Luck is still the Heisman favorite, although players like Ball, Richardson, Griffin, Keenum and Barkley will get support as well.

Washington won the Apple Cup 38-21 over Washington St. Wazzu coach Paul Wulff is among those rumored to be on the chopping block.

  • Louisville came back to beat USF 34-24 and is in the driver's seat for the league BCS berth at 7-5. The Cardinals just need a Cincinnati loss to UConn next week.

The Bearcats win the league with a win and West Viringia loss at South Florida

West Virginia sacked Tino Sunseri 10 times and came from behind for a 21-20 win in the final Backyard Brawl for the foreseeable future.

  • Case Keenum had another huge day with 457 yards and five scores in 48-16 win at Tulsa. Houston clinched C-USA South and will host the title game against Southern Miss.

Larry Porter was fired at Memphis after the Golden Eagles drilled the Tigers 44-7.

Northern Illinois clinched the MAC West and will host Ohio for the MAC title after a 18-12 win over EMU.

La Tech won its first ever WAC title 44-0 over New Mexico St, and accepted a Poinsettia Bowl bid after the game.

FAU picked up its first win of the season - the last team to do so this year - with a 38-35 win over UAB.

    November 27, 4:30 PM

  • The Harris poll is out. More of the same. It's hard to imagine voters having enough of a change of heart with teams 3-5 to move Alabama out of #2 just to avoid a rematch or reward a conference champion.

    November 27, 1:30 PM

  • The coaches poll is out. Arkansas only fell to tenth. I have reflected a similar change in the Harris poll.

Also, Virginia Tech's lead over Stanford is almost gone. Oklahoma St made up ground on both of those two as well. Alabama's lead over the Hokies is 120 points, or an average of two spots. That means that Va Tech is more like fourth than third.

    November 27, 10:30 AM

  • Bowl projections are up.

    November 27, 8:30 AM

  • This week's projections are up. I have Arkansas falling to tenth. I see that as a floor. The voters may not drop them as far as I did.

I do expect to see a Big East team in this week's rankings. West Virginia, and maybe Cincinnati, will move up. It may turn out that neither wins the league. Louisville will if Connecticut beats the Bearcats next week.

  • We are all set with an LSU-Georgia SEC title game, which just about every talking head says doesn't matter - we're getting LSU-Alabama no matter what happens. That's ridiculous. If Georgia wins the SEC, what possible justification can there be for Alabama, which is - at best - the third most successful team in the SEC this year, finishing in the top two of the national rankings? There isn't one.

I am working on bowl projections next, so more to come.

    Player of the Week

Is there any doubt who the real Pac-12 South division champs are? Matt Barkley and USC made sure there wasn't any. Barkley threw for 423 yards and six touchdowns in a 50-0 blowout of South title-game reps UCLA. It was the worst loss in the series for UCLA since 1930. I guess the Bruins should have worn blue jerseys instead of white flags.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

Maryland had it locked up, but then it was coughed up. The Terps led NC State 41-14 halfway through the third quarter, but gave up 42 unanswered points and lost 56-41. Three fourth-quarter turnovers helped the Wolfpack comeback.

    Palm Readings

    November 23

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

  • So, what happens if the SEC blows up?

If Arkansas beats LSU and Alabama beats Auburn, you have the dreaded, everyone-beat-everyone-else, three-way tie atop the SEC West. In this case, that would be decided by eliminating the lowest-rated team in the BCS standings and then using head-to-head for the others.

Typical voting patterns would indicate LSU finishing third. That would send Bama to the title game. I could also see a case for the Tide finishing third, which would favor Arkansas.

I don't see much of a case for Arkansas being third unless they win on something of a fluke. Or if the ESPN drumbeat for that outcome, which has been going on all week, influences voters. ESPN clearly wants to televise an LSU-Alabama rematch, and their commentary reflects that.

If Georgia wins the SEC (and we'll assume a win over Georgia Tech as well), things could really get messed up. I'm sure once again, ESPN would campaign to keep LSU-Alabama as 1-2, but voters normally would move Georgia way up the rankings - maybe even have them as the top-rated team in the entire league. Voters would probably have the Bulldogs ahead of whichever team the beat in that game.

In 2001, two-loss Colorado was the highest-rated Big 12 team in the polls, ahead of one-loss Nebraska. Nebraska played for the title anyway because the polls didn't carry as much weight in the formula back then. Quiz - who was the #2 team in the polls at the end of that season?

In any event, a loss by LSU in either game could open the door for perhaps Oklahoma St. Much less likely Virginia Tech. The Cowboys would probably need some serious style points against the Sooners on Dec 3 though to encourage voters to move them back up ahead of the Hokies and Stanford.

Voters could change their mind and go with OSU over Bama anyway like they did in 2006, just to avoid a rematch, but that seems less likely this time than it did back then.

  • Last week, Miami self-imposed a bowl ban. This week, Ohio St AD Gene Smith said the Buckeyes have no intention of following suit. Penn St also still maintains it will go to a bowl if invited. PSU would not be sitting out to placate the NCAA though, if it chose to.

  • The coaching carousel should be very active this year. It already has been.

Bob Davie was announced last week as the new coach at New Mexico. He'll have quite a task rebuilding that program, but it can be done.

Urban Meyer to Ohio St rumors have been in overdrive this week. That can't be helping the team prepare for Michigan.

It was announced this week that former Penn St coach Joe Paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer. His prognosis is good, but at his age, every problem is magnified.

    Player of the Week

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III was too much for Oklahoma. It looked like Baylor was willing to settle for OT, but when Oklahoma called a timeout to try to force a punt, RG3 took over. He had two long runs and then threw a game-winning 34-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds left to cap a 45-38 win over the Sooners. RG3 ended with 479 yards through the air and four touchdowns.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

Clemson has picked a bad time to tank. The Tigers have now lost two of three and even struggled in the game it did win. The most recent debacle was a 37-13 loss to NC State during which the Tigers turned it over four times and gave up 27 points in the second quarter alone. Maybe Clemson peaked too soon.

    This Week in the BCS

    November 20, 7:30 PM

  • The official release is out. Oklahoma St is indeed fourth and the most likely non-rematch option, but I don't imagine voters abandoning LSU-Alabama until one of them loses.

Boise St is up to seventh with no realistic shot of playing in a BCS game. The highest rated team ever left out was #3 Kansas St in 1998, thus the Kansas St rule that automatically qualifies an AQ non-champion rated 3rd or 4th. Since then, three teams ranked 5th have been left out, most recently Oregon in 2005.

Undefeated Houston is now eighth and still in control of the non-AQ spot in the BCS. The current projection is that they would take on Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. If that happens, a basketball score is likely to break out.

    November 20, 3:30 PM

  • Miami announced today that it has decided to sit out the postseason as self-punishment for the Nevin Shapiro scandal. I have changed the bowl projections to reflect that.

  • You will notice that Penn St, despite nine wins, is not listed at a Big Ten bowl. I am hearing that they will fall as far as the law allows, and my projections allow them to fall all the way out.

If Penn St wins the league, the Rose has to take them. If the Nits win the division, but lose the CCG, they cannot fall below the Gator. There is a one-win rule that affects the Cap 1 and (conditionally) Outback bowls, but not beyond that, so if PSU loses next week, it could fall all the way out.

One of the lower bowls on the list, say the ones in Texas or Detroit, may decide to take a flyer on them anyway because they may feel they won't get too many chances at Penn St, but at the moment, that is not what I'm hearing.

    November 20, 11:30 AM

  • The coaches poll is out. Oklahoma St did better than I expected. The Cowboys should still be hanging in at #4 in the BCS this week and is still viable as a national title contender.

I changed the Harris projection to reflect the reaction the coaches had to this week's action.

    November 20, 9 AM

  • The projection is up, but I don't think I have ever been less sure of what is going to happen today.

I fell pretty good about the top three being the SEC West trio. After that? How far will Oregon fall? How far will Oklahoma St fall? I think the voters will be better to Oregon because they'll treat Stanford as a little bit of a floor. I do have Stanford ahead, but not far.

Oklahoma St is still going to be a very strong computer team, and if the Cowboys don't take too bad of a beating in the polls this week, they can't be ruled out of the BCS title hunt.

That reminds me - my bowl projections are up too. I do have OSU winning Bedlam, but still not making the title game. I believe that voters will no longer think they have a good option except for an LSU-Alabama rematch if my projections play out.

That means a Sugar Bowl without an SEC team. I have Michigan-Houston there. Also, Stanford would again automatically qualify as an at-large team.

    What a mess. More later.

    November 19

I don't usually have to write here on a Saturday morning, but the #2 team in the country doesn't usually lose on a Friday night.

Oklahoma St went down at Iowa St 37-31 in double OT, turning the BCS upside down once again.

A little history lesson is in order. First, that's the biggest late-season upset since 2007, when #1 and #2 each lost on each of the last two weeks of the season. Pitt beat West Virginia on that final weekend, and the Panthers' DC was none other than Iowa St coach Paul Rhodes.

That year also, LSU jumped from #7 to #2 on the final day after winning the SEC title. They moved past #1 and #2, which lost, #4 Georgia and #5 Kansas, which didn't play that day because they didn't win divisions in their leagues, and #6 Virginia Tech, which won the ACC that day, but it wasn't enough to keep its thin lead over LSU from disappearing.

That bodes well for Oklahoma St still, which can still win the highest rated league by beating Oklahoma on the final day, while #2 Alabama sits at home. The problem is, #3 Oregon may also win a league that day. However, Oregon is a rematch for LSU, and if voters truly don't want a rematch, the Bedlam winner will still be their best choice to avoid that. OSU's loss last night though may make voters decide that the Bedlam winner isn't a good enough choice to avoid a rematch.

We'll see. Saturday hasn't even started yet. All of that may be moot in 12 hours or so.

    Palm Readings

    November 16

  • The Penn St scandal is something I find very difficult to write about, talk about or even think about. It's a story that won't go away any time soon.

And that is a problem for the team this season. You have people calling for the team to cancel the rest of its season. That is overkill and solves nothing. Penn St will be a distraction wherever it goes, but it's not fair to the team or its opponents to cancel games. That won't help a single victim.

But, the bowl season is a different animal. After the Nebraska game last week, interim school president Rod Erickson said, "if our student-athletes have earned the right to play in postseason play, they should certainly be allowed to do so."

I don't disagree with that in principle, but good luck finding a bowl that wants them. Penn St, which is one of the top five bowl draws, is toxic to the bowls this year. Nobody wants that story to be the story of their bowl. Bowls also have the other team to consider. That teams' coaches, players, whatnot will be asked a litany of uncomfortable questions about Penn St, Joe Paterno, etc.

One bowl rep told me, "You don't want to have Good Morning America trucks sitting outside your stadium covering breaking news on this story during your week."

So, while I show the Nits in the Pizza Bowl, I may be overestimating where they land.

Or - I may be underestimating. They could win the league. The Rose Bowl can't say no. Or, they could win the division, and league bowl selection rules would protect them from falling below the Gator. If they don't win the division, they might stay home entirely.

  • The Big East, in an effort to find at least one Western partner for Boise St, has turned its attentions to BYU. The Cougars are apparently seriously considering giving up its one-year independence to join the league in the hopes of getting BCS AQ status. A Western partner seems to be the last holdup in getting the Broncos into the fold.

  • Ohio clinched the MAC East division tonight with a 29-28 win over Bowling Green. The Bobcats join Clemson as division champions.

  • You know the season is nearing the end when you start to see some of those great rivalry games. Realignment has moved some of them to earlier in the season, but those still at the end get special treatment here.

Last week, I finished 8-3, including a miss on my upset special. I'm now 64-36 overall, 2-10 on the upset picks. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    * - home team. All games Saturday unless otherwise noted.

The Hoos control their own destiny for the division title. They have been one of the pleasant surprises this season, but probably aren't quite ready to win at Tallahassee.

The Sooners will get tested for sure, but Baylor's defense will probably let them down.

    This Week in the BCS

    November 13, 11:30 PM

  • The race for a non-AQ spot in the BCS is pretty interesting now.

#10 Boise St can only watch and hope because you have to be a conference champion to qualify and the Broncos are looking up at #19 TCU in the Mountain West.

#11 Houston controls its own destiny, but history seems to indicate the Cougars will somehow mess it up. They do have a tough game left at Tulsa, plus the C-USA title game (if they qualify) against #20 Southern Miss.

If the Golden Eagles run the table, knocking off previously-undefeated Houston in the process, then the spot is a battle between them and the Frogs. Would beating Houston be enough to push USM over TCU in the BCS standings? Maybe.

Also, the non-AQ team has to finish in the top 12 (unlikely for USM and TCU) or in the top 16 and ahead of one AQ conference champ. With the Big East self-destructing again this year, top 16 should do. Neither TCU or Southern Miss is there yet, but I figure they will be if they win out.

Southern Miss in the BCS. Think about that possiblity. Who had that at the beginning of the year?

  • Clemson clinched the ACC Atlantic division title with a 31-28 win over Wake Forest. The Tigers came back from 14 points down late in the third quarter and won on a 43-yard FG as time expired.

  • Nebraska scored the first 17 points and made it stand up in a 17-14 win at Penn St. It was the Nittany Lions first game since 1965 without Joe Paterno as coach.

  • Wisconsin got four touchdown passes from Russell Wilson and three scrores from Montee Ball, who set the conference record for touchdowns in a season with 27, in a 42-13 win over Minnesota.

  • Michigan St got redemption for last year's mauling at Iowa City by beating the Hawkeyes 34-21. MSU and Penn St each lead Big Ten divisions by a game, but Wisconsin also controls its own destiny and hosts the Nits in two weeks.

  • Missouri lost Henry Posey, the Big 12's leading rusher, for the rest of the season with a knee injury in a 17-5 win over Texas.

  • West Virginia won at Cincinnati 24-21, blocking a potential game-tying FG on the final play. Worse for the Bearcats was an injury to QB Zach Collaros, who spent much of the game on the sidelines on crutches with a broken ankle. His regular season is over and he will be replaced by sophomore Munchie Legaux, and no, I'm not making that name up. Cinci has a one-game lead over five other teams in the Big East race.

  • Brandon Weedon had another huge day with 423 yards in the air and five scores to lead Oklahoma St to a 66-6 win at Texas Tech (take that, Oklahoma!).

  • Collin Klein had five rushing TDs and another passing in Kansas State's 56-53 4 OT win over Texas A&M.

  • After it's best start since 1951 at 6-0, Illinois has fallen apart. The Illinis lost its fourth straight 31-14 to Michigan, even though Denard Robinson missed most of the second half with a wrist injury.

After the game, Illinois LB Tulon Henry was shot in the hand, ending his season, but luckily nothing worse. Henry was one of three people shot at an off-campus party. Henry had been sent there to get some younger teammates to leave.

  • Georgia is one win away from a spot in the SEC title game after dominating Auburn 45-7. Auburn only managed 195 yards of offense and turned it over three times against the Bulldogs. Aaron Murray had four TD passes for Georgia.

  • Western Kentucky's five-game winning streak is finally over. It took #1 LSU to stop it. The Tigers woke up at half time and cruised to a 42-9 win.

  • Lousiana Tech went into Ole Miss and smacked the Rebels around 27-7. The Bulldogs scored twice on defense. After the game, Ole Miss fired Houston Nutt again.

  • New Mexico picked up its first win of the season with a 21-14 victory over UNLV. Only Florida Atlantic remains winless in I-A.

    November 13, 7:30 PM

  • The official release is out.

The Harris poll wasn't that much different than the coaches. Stanford only fell to 7th, while Virginia Tech was 9th. It was the opposite in the coaches' poll.

Boise St is the highest ranked non-AQ team still, but Houston, Southern Miss and TCU all have a better chance to qualify for the BCS becasuse they can still win their respective conferences. Only one would automatically qualify, of course, and Houston has the advantage there.

Speaking of Houston, the Cougars are new to the BCS portion of this week's bowl projections, which are now up.

I have Penn St pretty low on the Big Ten pecking order. Bowls may shy away from the Lions and their story this season. The Big Ten has a one-win rule, so Penn St can only fall so far.

It looks more and more like the Bedlam game is a play-in for the BCS title game. I believe that if Oklahoma wins, voters will jump the Sooners past Alabama and Oregon (if they are still there) and into the championship game to avoid a rematch for LSU.

Michigan is finally out of my BCS bowl picture, but not because I expect them to lose. Instead, I expect the Fiesta to go with the allure of Andrew Luck (and higher ranking of Stanford) over the massive throng of Michigan fans. The Fiesta is the only bowl that would ever consider passing up the hundreds of thousands that follow the Wolverines for the hundreds that support Stanford.

I feel pretty good about our chances of having enough eligible teams again this year. I'm up to 73 in my projection.

    November 13, 1:30 PM

  • The coaches poll is out. Boise did better than I expected. I re-projected the Harris to reflect the coaches' thinking. Boise could be ahead of Houston this week, although as I wrote below, that doesn't matter.

  • I am doing things in a different order today. I'm working on the bowl projections. The BCS has turned upside down again.

    November 13, 8:30 AM

The projection chart is up this morning. It was a good weekend if you want an Alabama-LSU rematch. Or if you're Houston.

I have Stanford 9th and Boise 12th. Note that Boise cannot automatically qualify now unless TCU loses. Houston too. The spot for a non-AQ team specifies that it goes to a conference champion, and TCU now has a one-game lead in the Mountain West.

Boise St has kicked away another BCS possibility. For the second year in a row, the Bronocos undefeated season was on the line, and on the toe of its kicker, but the field goal attempt went wide, and their undefeated season went away. This time, TCU escaped with a 36-35 win on the blue field. That broke Boise State's 35-game home winning streak.

    November 9

  • The Penn St scandal has resulted in two more firings. Graham Spanier is "no longer the university president, effective immediately," according to John P. Surma, the vice chairman of the Penn St Board of Trustees, speaking at a press conference. Provost Rod Erickson is the interim president.

Also, legendary head coach Joe Paterno, whose name is on the trophy that will be awarded to the Big Ten champion, retired effective at the end of the season earlier today. The Board of Trustees accepted his retirement and told him he could begin his retirement, again, Surma said, "effective immediately." Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been named the interim coach and will coach the team against Nebraska.

Both of those moves absolutely had to happen, and it's refreshing to see some actual leadership on the Penn St campus, even though it was late arriving.

Assistant Mike McQueary, the eyewitness to Jerry Sandusky's disgusting act, is still on the staff. Everyone up the food chain that his report was related to is now out of a job.

The US Board of Education is also investigating the university's handling of this matter.

  • Chuck Neinas, the interim Big 12 commissioner, told CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd that he thinks the BCS could do away with AQ status altogether and go to a system where the top 10 teams in the rankings play in the BCS bowls, regardless of conference. Color me extremely skeptical.

  • This has been a relatively quiet week on the realignment front. Boise State's president Bob Kustra has been given permission by the Idaho Board of Education to act with regard to conference movement. Kustra said he expected a decision this week.

  • Basketball season started early in the MAC, especially at Toledo, which has given up 63 points in each of its last two games. The Rockets are now 1-1 in those games after a 66-63 win over Western Michigan Tuesday night.

  • Northern Illinois and Toledo got the week off to an explosive start. The Huskies won 63-60 at the Glass Bowl in Toledo to assume control of the MAC West.

Last year, these two played basketball games with scores of 64-54 and 64-64 (in regulation).

On Wednesday, NIU suspended freshman LB Jamaal Bass one game for plowing over a Toledo band member as the team took the field Tuesday night.

  • Georgia has suspended three running backs, including starter Isaiah Crowell, one game for failing drug tests. They will miss this week's game against New Mexico St.

  • BREAKING: 45 games involving division I-A teams originally scheduled for Saturday have been postponed due to lack of interest.

  • Here's the latest realignment news.

West Virginia has filed suit to get out of the Big East and join the Big 12 by next season. The Big East intends to hold them to the 27 months notice and keep the Mountaineers until the 2014 season.

The Big East meanwhile has reportedly invited Boise St, Air Force and Navy as football only members, and Houston, SMU and UCF as all-sports members. Expect the last three to jump in quickly. It might be slower for the other three.

When West Virginia goes, the Big East will be looking to replace them as well. Temple seems to be the most likely candidate.

Missouri still has not officially moved on to the SEC.

If the Mountain West loses AFA and Boise, look for them to call up a couple more schools from the minors - er, the WAC.

    This Week in the BCS

    October 31, 8:00 AM

    boo.

Massey's ratings are out, so this week's chart is complete. The conference ratings are also posted now.

    October 30, 11:00 PM

  • Houston is now high enough in the rankings to automatically qualify for a BCS spot, as long as someone beats Boise and knocks the Broncos down below them. Only the highest-rated non-AQ team gets a spot automatically.

  • Today's head scratcher: Wake Forest, Virginia and UCLA still control their own destinies for conference titles. Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia and Florida St do not.

  • Georgia stayed tied with South Carolina in the SEC East with a 24-20 come from behind win over Florida. The Gators have lost four straight for the first time since 1988.

  • UCLA freshman Tevin McDonald intercepted three passes setting up 17 Bruins points in a 31-14 win over Cal.

  • My favorite in-game stat line from yesterday. At one point in the first half of the Michigan-Purdue game, the turnover count was Michigan 2, Purdue 0, and points off turnovers was also Michigan 2, Purdue 0. Purdue intercepted a pass deep in its own territory, and shortly after that, Caleb TerBush was sacked in the end zone for a safety.

  • Iowa did something yesterday that such luminaries as New Mexico St and North Dakota St could not, no matter how hard they tried - lose to Minnesota. The Gophers came back from 11 down in the fourth quarter to win it 22-21.

  • Drake Dunsmore caught a school record four touchdown passes in Northwestern's 59-38 win at Indiana.

  • Landry Jones threw for 505 yards and five scores in Oklahoma's rebound win over Kansas St.

  • LaMichael James came back from his elbow injury and ran for 53 yards in Oregon's 43-28 win over Wazzu.

  • Talk about a letdown. A week after winning in Norman, Texas Tech lost at home to Iowa St 41-7.

  • Ohio St fans stormed the field - you read that right: Ohio St fans stormed the field - after beating Wisconsin 33-29 on a 40-yard pass from Braxton Miller to Devin Smith with 20 seconds left.

  • Chris Polk became the first Washington player ever to rush (144) and receive (100) for 100 yards each in the Huskies 42-31 win over Arizona. Polk also scored five touchdowns.

  • There was controversy at Notre Dame this week after Brian Kelly ripped his inherited recruits in the media on Thursday. There was a team meeting during which Kelly apologized on Friday. Saturday, the Irish took out whatever frustration they had on Navy 56-14.

  • Pitt RB Ray Graham is out for the year with a knee injury suffered Wed against UConn. Pitt also lost two other starters in that game to season-ending injuries.

  • Utah picked up its first Pac-12 win 27-8 over Oregon St.

  • BYU had not one, not two, but three bad snaps on punts that resulted in 21 TCU points in a 38-28 loss to the Horned Frogs.

  • In its first four years of I-A play, Western Kentucky beat exactly three I-A foes. Now, they've won four in a row after a 31-28 OT win at UL Monroe.

    October 30, 9:00 PM

The BCS ratings are out, and there wasn't much movement of note beyond Stanford's climb past Boise St, which was coming eventually.

The big losers: Clemson fell to 11th (not too bad), Kansas St 14th, Michigan St 17th and Wisconsin 20th.

Oklahoma is in the best position among one-loss teams at the moment despite trailing Oregon in the polls. Oregon may gain enough computer ground to close that gap, and maybe even put the Ducks' poll strength into play. Oregon will never catch Oklahoma in the computers though, so it is important for the Ducks to keep putting up big numbers to protect that poll position.

Of course, next week, either LSU or Alabama will join that battle.

    October 30, 5:00 PM

The bowl projections and bowl eligibility pages have been updated. I am still one team short of filling the bowls.

    October 30, 3:00 PM

The Harris poll came out early today, which is nice. They like Clemson even more than the coaches do, dropping the Tigers only to 10th. That might be high enough to keep Clemson in the top 10 overall.

Oklahoma St also expanded its lead on Stanford in this poll, but only by six points.

Oregon is the top rated one-loss team in the polls, but Oklahoma is so much stronger in the computers that the Sooners will be the highest-rated one-loss team overall.

Nebraska is the top-rated Big Ten team after its 24-e waxing of Michigan St. Rex Burkhead ran for 130 yards and three scores for the Huskers despite some late-game cramping.

If things were decided today though, Penn St would be the league champ. The Nits are the last undefeated team in league play at 5-0 after a thrilling (yes, I'm being sarcastic) 10-7 win in the snow over Illinois. The tough part of the schedule is ahead for PSU though - Nebraska, @Ohio St, @Wisconsin. They will be in first place at least one more week though. They are taking next week off so they can watch LSU and Alabama.

    October 30, 1:30 PM

  • The coaches poll is out and Clemson did a little better than I originally thought. The Tigers check in at #12, which isn't too bad of a fall. They turned it over four times in a 31-17 loss at Georgia Tech.

Stanford, which needed triple OT to stave off USC, is still ahead of Oklahoma St for third, but the Cardinal's 26-point lead was shaved to just nine.

Andrew Luck threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns to his own team, but it was the one that he threw to USC that almost doomed the Cardinal. That gave the Trojans the lead with just over 3 minutes left, but Luck bounced back and led his team on a game-tying touchdown drive to force the OT.

The Cowboys throttled Baylor 59-24 in an offensive shootout where the Bears brought only blanks. They had 622 yards of total offense, more than the 601 put up by OSU, but they turned it over five times and were stopped twice more on downs. Baylor didn't get a touchdown until the fourth quarter, when it was already 49-3.

    Player of the Week

  • His team didn't win and he didn't even play, but was there any better moment than watching former Rutgers player Eric LeGrand lead his team onto the field against West Virginia yesterday?

  • Honorable mention to Houston QB Case Keenum, who put up some sick numbers on Rice. He threw for 534 yards and nine touchdowns in the Cougars' 73-34 win over their cross-town rival. The fifth of those touchdowns set the NCAA career record for touchdown passes, breaking the mark previously held by former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

OK, let me start out by saying absolutely no character or work ethic was shown on this play. Arkansas' Marquel Wade just about decapitated Vanderbilt PR Jonathan Krause, who was attempting to make a fair catch. Wade plowed right through him well before the ball arrived, then celebrated like an idiot. The officials correctly ejected him from that game. I hope the SEC ejects him from at least another one.

  • OK, here's the latest rumors in the realignment fiasco. Remember, there's a good chance none of this is true.

Missouri's departure to the SEC is no longer imminent, but still appears to be inevitable. It's gotten to the point that the Big 12 is reportedly looking for a replacement. You'll see versions of the word "reportedly" a lot.

On Tuesday, it was reported West Virginia had been accepted as Mizzou's replacement. On Wednesday, that was backtracked and Louisville stepped into the picture as a possible replacement as well. By this evening, there was even some talk both schools would be invited.

Oh, did I mention that US Senators are chiming in too? Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is supposedly lobbying Big 12 officials on Louisville's behalf and West Virginia's Jay Rockefeller is whining about it and threatening to investigate, um, something. He's not happy, and that's the point.

Meanwhile, the Big East is reportedly working hard to grab Boise St. It was reported tonight that the Broncos have contacted the Big West to see about placing their non-football teams there. That's right, Boise St could be in both the Big East and Big West. Oh, and also the Pac 12, where its wrestling program competes.

Boise St is the key to the league growing back to 12 teams and keeping its AQ status beyond 2013. Air Force, Navy, Houston, SMU and UCF are also waiting on Boise St. If the league then has to replace Louisville or West Virginia, Temple is considered a candidate, as is - and this shows the level of desperation the league may be reaching - Memphis.

One thing that ended up being debunked was the concept of what Dan Wetzel called Conference WTF, which would have seen what was left of the Big East join the C-USA/Mountain West merger.

  • Former Rutgers player Eric LeGrand, who has been recovering from a paralyzing injury, will lead the Scarlet Knights onto the field against West Virginia this weekend.

  • Pitt RB Ray Graham appears to have suffered a knee injury during the early part of the game with UConn tonight.

  • Florida International beat Troy 23-20 in OT Tuesday night. Troy's kicker missed a PAT during the game and a FG in overtime.

Last week, I finished 4-2, including my first hit on my upset special. I'm now 44-27 overall, 1-7 on the upset picks. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    This Week in the BCS

    October 23, 9:30 PM

The official BCS is out. It came out pretty close to what I had earlier.

Oklahoma St is in the best position to play the SEC winner for the title. They have a very slight edge over Stanford in the polls, but a huge lead in the computers, which will probably shrink some, but Stanford will never catch OSU.

Boise St and Clemson, both of which are ahead of Stanford at the moment, need the Cardinal and Cowboys to get beat.

Oklahoma fell to 8th, and Wisconsin all the way down to 15th. The Sooners and Oregon are in the best position for a one-loss team to play for the title.

Everybody is foaming at the mouth about a LSU/Alabama rematch. I won't sit here and say it absolutely won't happen, but I believe the only way it does is if there is no other reasonable choice.

Voters in 2006 showed us that they didn't prefer a rematch. Florida was a good, reasonable choice over Michigan, so the Gators were chosen. I think if you have an undefeated Boise St, or maybe even a one-loss Oklahoma, that team could get in ahead of the Bama-LSU loser. And I don't think it matters how good of a game the first one is.

At this point, we should probably be focused more on the 6-undefeated-team scenario. We'll have time to talk about the rematch later.

    October 23, 6:30 PM

  • LSU seemed to be biding its time with Auburn, leading 7-3 about half way through the second quarter, when the Bayou Bengals exploded for five touchdowns in about 13 minutes of game time and went on to a 45-10 win.

  • Alabama also struggled early against Tennessee. It was tied at six at halftime, but the Tide rolled the Vols in the second half and won 37-6.

  • Andrew Luck got to show off his ability to hand off in Stanford's 65-21 win over Washington. The Cardinal ran for 446 yards and Luck only threw for 169.

  • OU is done, but Big 12 still has two undefeated teams. Collin Klein ran for four touchdowns in Kansas State's 59-21 win over Kansas. Oklahoma St got four touchdowns from Joseph Randle in the Cowboys 45-24 win at Missouri.

  • Kourtnei Brown returned both an interception and a fumble for touchdowns, and Tajh Boyd added five TD passes in Clemson's 59-38 win over UNC.

  • No Darron Thomas. No LaMichael James. No problem. Oregon steamrolled Colorado 45-2 in Boulder. Not too many teams could lose their top QB and RB and beat anyone 45-2.

The Pac 12 newbies, Colorado and Utah (a 34-10 loser to Cal) are a combined 0-8. The good news is they play each other eventually.

  • Stop me if you've heard this one before. Notre Dame turned it over three times, one of which was retuned for a touchdown, in a 31-17 loss to USC. It was 17-10 late in the third quarter and the Irish were at the USC 1 when Dayne Crist, in relief of the temporarily injured Tommy Rees, fumbled a snap and it was eventually scooped up by Jawanza Starling and returned for a score. Rees came back in after that drive and turned it over twice more, one setting up a short Trojan score. That loss all-but-kills Notre Dame's BCS hopes.

  • Joe Paterno tied Eddie Robinson's all-time Division I career win record at 408 with Penn State's 34-24 win at Northwestern. At least until some of them get vacated. (KIDDING! PROBABLY!)

  • Arkansas came back from 17 down to beat Ole Miss and former coach Houston Nutt 29-24. Nutt, as you might expect, took it out on the media after the game, picking on Neal McCready for saying the Hogs would win 49-10.

  • TCU broke a 79-year-old school record for most points in a game in a 69-0 win over New Mexico. After the game, the Lobos fired Mike Locksley again, just to be sure.

  • Cincinnati saved the Big East from a complete and utter disaster with a come from behind win at South Florida. The Bearcats trailed by 10, came back to get the lead, only to give it up with about two minutes left. Cinci came back again and scored the game-winning TD with 12 seconds to go in a 37-34 win. Cincinnati is the last one-loss team in the league.

The disaster for the league came on Friday, when its highest-ranked team, West Virginia got smoked by Syracuse. Also that evening, Rutgers picked up its second loss of the season at Louisville.

  • ECU QB Dominique Davis completed 40 of 45 passes, including his first 26, in the Pirates 38-35 win over Navy. The 26 straight completions set the NCAA record for most in one game, and his 36 over two games is also a record.

  • Case Keenum became the all-time NCAA leader in total yardage in Houston's 63-28 win over Marshall. He broke the record previously held by Hawaii's Timmy Chang. He is within a couple games of breaking Chang's all-time passing yardage record and former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell's passing TD record.

  • Buffalo stormed back from a 21-point fourth quarter deficit to score what appeared to be the game-tying touchdown with 14 seconds, only to see their kicker miss the PAT. NIU hung on for a 31-30 win.

  • Ohio beat Akron 37-20 in a game played just a few hours after the body of a man who apparently committed suicide was found inside Akron's stadium.

  • Western Kentucky ended an 18-game home losing streak with a 42-23 win over UL Lafayette, which had been receiving votes in the polls. It was the first home win ever for the Hilltoppers over a I-A opponent.

  • UAB got its first win of the season 26-24 over Big East wannabe UCF on a field goal with 41 seconds left.

    October 23, 4:30 PM

The Harris poll is out. It looks very similar to the coaches' poll, except that Stanford and Oklahoma St are switched in the top 7.

The top three in the current projection chart are secure. The next three, Boise St, Clemson and Stanford could change if the computers that are out like Stanford more than I suspect.

The next four teams, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas St and Arkansas, are within .023 of each other, so again, computer variance could shake up that order.

    October 23, 1:30 PM

The new bowl projections are up. Obviously, there were several changes this week. Also, I am back to not having enough eligible teams.

BYU clinched the first bowl berth of the season. By becoming eligible, the Cougars qualify for the Armed Forces Bowl.

    More to come.

    October 23, 11:30 AM

The coaches poll is out. As expected, LSU moved up to #1. Both Oklahoma and Wisconsin ended up one spot higher than I projected.

Stanford was twice as close to Boise as I predicted, but Clemson was also twice as close to Stanford. The result is that the current projection has Clemson at #5, squeezed between Boise St and Stanford. We'll see how the Harris poll impacts that in a few hours.

Southern Miss makes an appearance at #25, and the Big East's only representative is Cincinnati at #23.

Michigan St jumped up to #10 on the strength of its win over Wisconsin. Texas Tech joins the poll at #22.

    October 23, 8:30 AM

We finally got our first big upset of the season. Texas Tech went into Norman and ended Oklahoma's 39-game home winning streak with a 41-38 win.

Also, and I barely consider this an upset, Wisconsin lost at Michigan St 37-31 after a Hail Mary pass as time expired was batted into the hands of MSU WR Drew Nichol at the one, and he was just able to get the ball across the plane as two Badger defenders tried to keep him out. The initial call on the field was no touchdown, but replay overturned it.

Look for Stanford to make the biggest move up near the top of the standings. The Cardinal whipped Washington 65-21. I guess that 21-point line wasn't as bad as I thought.

Texas Tech QB Seth Doege keyed the big upset of the day with 441 passing yards, four touchdowns, and another on the ground in the Red Raiders 41-38 win at Oklahoma.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

What UCLA did in the desert was downright embarrassing Thursday night, especially in the first half. They allowed Arizona to score touchdowns on each of its first six possessions, and only managed 37 yards rushing for the game against a defense that was giving up nearly 200 per game going into Thursday night. The only time the Bruins showed any fight was with :04 left in the first half, when there was a bench-clearing brawl (and, simultaneously, a fan dressed as a referee running onto the field, and then turning into a streaker). Dan Guerrero said earlier in the week that Neuheisel was "day-to-day." After the game, he said Neuheisel was safe until the end of the season. What??? He should have been fired at halftime.

    Palm Readings

    October 18

  • Everyone seems to be waiting for Missouri. The NY Times reported on Monday that the Tigers's move to the SEC was "imminent and inevitable." Imminent has come and gone.

I still am not sure Mizzou has the votes to get in, but maybe they do. In any event, the Big 12 is working on contingency plans.

The Big East is not waiting for anyone and moving ahead. The league announced earlier this week that it would up its exit fee from $5M to $10M as soon as one more school agrees to become a member.

Reportedly, a higher exit fee was a concern for Air Force, Navy and Boise St.

There was also a report earlier in the week that Houston had received an invitation, but the league denied that.

As we continue to lear, rumors about this stuff are rarely true. If it doesn't come directly from the mouth of someone in charge, there's a good chance it's wrong.

  • LSU will be shorthanded when it takes on Auburn this week. CB Tyrann Mathieu (the Honey Badger), RB Spencer Ware and backup DB Tharold Simon have been suspended for at least this game for some violation of team rules.

  • It was Suspension Week in the SEC. The league suspended two Georgia players, DT Kwame Geathers and DB Shawn Williams, as well as C Logan Stewart from Vanderbilt, for their roles in a fracas during last week's game.

  • No word yet from Michigan St or the Big Ten regarding Spartan DE William Gholston, who was flagged for punching a Michigan player, and then again for trying to tear Denard Robinson's head off, in last week's game with the Wolverines.

  • This season's coaching casualty count is now up to three with the resignation of Tulane coach Bob Toledo. He will be replaced on an interim basis by OL coach Mark Hutson.

  • We've already had a game this week. Remember when Florida International was the hottest thing in Miami after a 3-0 start that included wins over Louisville and UCF? The Panthers have now lost three of four after Tuesday night's 34-16 defeat at Arkansas St.

  • The CollegeBCS.com user poll is up and going again this year. You can vote early each week. I'll put a link in the top 25 section.

You can see Paul Kislanko's excellent breakdown of our voting each week by clicking on the "Complete Poll" link at the bottom of the top 25.

  • It's an even more mediocre slate of games this week than last.

Last week, I finished 5-3, including a miss on my upset special. I'm now 40-25 overall, 0-7 on the upset picks, so I'm due to hit one of those. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    * - home team. All games Saturday unless otherwise noted.

    *Clemson 35
    North Carolina 21
The Tigers have a difficult stretch of games coming up that include at Georgia Tech and at South Carolina, so it's important for them to take care of business at home.
    Oklahoma St 45
    *Missouri 35
This should be a tougher game for the Cowboys. Mizzou has struggled on the road, but hasn't lost at home yet. Expect a lot of points, but more for OSU.
    Wisconsin 30
    *Michigan St 20
The Badgers will play in their first hostile environment all season. MSU has the defense to pull this off, but will they come down from the high of the win over Michigan and be focused again?
    *Stanford 41
    Washington 34
Is Stanford really a three-touchdown favorite? Washington is pretty capable offensively too, and while the Huskies don't have Andrew Luck, Keith Price is no slouch.
    *LSU 27
    Auburn 10
No Honey Badger, no problem. LSU should still be able to hold Auburn's offense in check.
    Upset of the Week
    USC 28
    *Notre Dame 27 (-8 1/2)
USC's defense is really going to be tested. The Irish seem to have cured their turnover bug from earlier in the season. Look for a relapse against the Trojans.

    This Week in the BCS

    October 17, 7:30 AM

  • This week's chart is now complete. Also, the bowl projections and bowl eligibility pages are up. Finally, the conference ratings page makes its debut.

  • South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore was injured and left the field on crutches in 14-12 win at Miss St. Lattimore only had 39 yards before being hurt in the 4th quarter. It was later reported that he is out for the year with torn knee ligaments.

  • First it was LaMichael James, now it's Darron Thomas, but the Ducks just keep on rolling. James was hurt last week in Oregon's win over Cal. Thomas went out with a leg injury during this week's 41-24 win over Arizona St. Thomas was also on crutches on the sidelines after he left, but he said after the game he expects to play next week.

  • Clemson trailed 38-24 halfway through the third quarter to Maryland, but stormed back to beat the Terps 56-45. Clemson is the last undefeated team in the ACC after Georgia Tech lost at Virginia 24-21.

  • Michigan St got 167 yards rushing and a touchdown from Edwin Baker to lead Sparty to a 28-14 win over Michigan. Isaiah Lewis ran a Denard Robinson interception back for a TD late to seal the game, and he taunted Robinson on the way in. It should have been flagged, by the standard set in the LSU game last week, but it wasn't.

  • Braxton Miller dropped back to pass only eight times against Illinois. He was sacked four times, all in the first half, threw three incompletions, and hit TE Jake Stonebreaker for a 17-yard TD pass with his only completion. That was enough to help propel the Buckeyes to a 17-7 win. Ohio St ran 51 times in the game, with fresh-off-suspension Boom Herron getting 23 of those carries for 114 yards and a score. The Illini suffered their first loss of the season.

  • QB James Franklin 6 TDs (3 each), plus one for ISU, in 52-17 win. Amazingly, Mizzou had no penalties in the game.

  • Auburn and Florida combined to use seven different players at quarterback in the Tigers 17-6 win.

  • Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill threw for 415 yards and six touchdowns in the Aggies' 55-28 win over Baylor. WR Ryan Swope caught 11 of those balls for 206 yards and four scores. RG3 set a school-record for Baylor with 430 yards passing. It was the third time in four games the TAMU defense has allowed the opposing QB a school record in passing yardage.

  • Wisconsin throttled Indiana for the second year in a row, 59-7. At least IU didn't give up 83 this time. Montee Ball 3 rushing TDs and one passing (to Russell Wilson).

  • It took LSU a while to get going, but the Tigers cruised to a 38-7 win over Tennessee. Matt Simms was 6-20 and had two picks in his first start at QB for Tennessee, replacing the injured Tyler Bray.

  • Kansas St QB Collin Klien ran for three touchdowns and passed for another in the Wildcats 41-34 win at Texas Tech.

  • USF got the year off to such a promising start with a win at Notre Dame, but is now 0-2 in the Big East after losing at UConn 16-10.

  • Texas has settled on a QB, not that it helped much. David Ash went the distance in a 38-26 loss to Oklahoma St.

  • Trent Richardson had a huge day, with 183 yards and four touchdowns in Alabama's 52-7 win at Ole Miss.

  • Kellen Moore also put up big numbers, completing 26-30 for 338 yards and four scores in Boise State's 63-13 rout of Colorado St.

  • Andrew Luck threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns as Stanford kept rolling with a 44-14 win over Washington St.

    October 16, 9:30 PM

  • The other day, the Mountain West and C-USA announced their long-talked about merger. Essentially, this will operate as one conference of (for now) 22 teams.

They may get it going in time for next year. It might take until 2013. Either way, the new association will petition the BCS for an automatic berth. As we have discussed here before, that is unrealistic. The Mountain West on its own doesnt' qualify. Adding C-USA, which is a lower rated league, won't help.

  • UCLA Dan Guerrero used a phrase you don't often hear used about a football coach. He said Rick Neuheisel was "day-to-day." Aren't we all.

    October 16, 7:30 PM

  • The official ratings are out. LSU did manage to squeeze ahead of Alabama for #1, by all of .0003. Oklahoma is in third.

  • There aren't any real surprises. Oklahoma St is 4th, followed by Boise St and Wisconsin. The Badgers are sixth because they haven't impressed the computers yet.

  • Stanford also hasn't impressed the computers, although the Cardinal isn't as far down as Wisconsin. Stanford has also underwhelmed the Harris voters, which have them all the way down at 7th. As a result, Clemson is ahead of the Cardinal for seventh overall.

  • The other major undefeated team, Kansas St, checks in at #11, behind one-loss teams Arkansas and Oregon.

  • The chart now shows the computer rankings for the BCS top 25. Massey and Wolfe will get updated as they get released.

  • Oh, dear. I forgot an undefeated team. Houston starts out 19th.

    October 16, 5:30 PM

  • The current projection is up. Only .0030 separates #1 Alabama and #3 LSU, which means the top three could appear in any order.

  • Sagarin's ratings are finally unbiased, meaning the current season stands on its own.

  • Peter Wolfe's ratings will debut tonight, right after the official BCS comes out.

  • Oklahoma St will be the #1 computer team. The Cowboys will be 4th overall. The #4 team in the polls is Wisconsin, but the Badgers SOS is dreadful right now, so they figure to slot in seventh.

  • The computers aren't really on board with Stanford yet either, and the voters are still undecided on them.

  • As you might expect, Michigan, Illinois and Georgia Tech took a beating in the polls. The computers still like Michigan a lot more than Michigan St.

    Player of the Week

Oklahoma WR Ryan Broyles had 13 catches for a school record 217 yards and two scores in the Sooners' 47-17 win at Kansas. His first touchdown catch gave him the NCAA career record for receptions, breaking the record previously held by Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield, and also the Big 12 record for career TD catches, passing former Oklahoma St star Rashaun Woods.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

Hawaii and San Jose St combined for 12 turnovers, six for each team, in an ugly (but exciting) 28-27 win for the Spartans. San Jose St had a 20-7 halftime lead, thanks in part to five of the Warriors' six turnovers, four of which came on their last four possessions of the half. San Jose St returned the favor by coughing the ball up on its first five possessions of the second half, and thereby coughing up the lead.

However, in the TD that put Hawaii in front, San Jose St blocked the PAT attempt and Duke Ihanacho limped it back for a defensive two-point conversion. Ihenacho came up lame (cramping) at his own 40, but Hawaii's effort to catch him was even more lame. San Jose also blocked a Hawaii FG attempt later in the half, but made up for it by missing one of their own.

    Palm Readings

    October 11

  • Coming up this week, the first official ratings and the debut of the Wolfe ratings.

  • Late breaking news: The NCAA has cleared Auburn in the Cam Newton case.

  • Here is the latest on conference realignment, although it may change before I get around to posting it.

TCU has made its move to the Big 12 official. That is probably the biggest win-win in this recent round of realignment, with Nebraska to the Big Ten a close second.

Missouri is still exploring its options. Presumably, that means waiting for the SEC to give them the green light.

Meanwhile, Big 12 consultant/commissioner Chuck Neinas says the league will be at ten teams next year, no matter what Mizzou does, and that the league has not given the school a deadline for a decision. There is no consensus as to whether to try to go to 12 teams.

The Big East is in full-out scramble mode. The league presidents seemingly meet once a week. Air Force, Navy, Temple (football only for those three), UCF, East Carolina, and lately, Boise St are all rumored to be on the league's radar. My favorite line about Boise State being on this list, and I'm sorry I don't remember who said it, was "Boise St isn't even in eastern Idaho."

CBSSports.com also reported that the league decided recently not to increase its exit fees, and is considering legal action against Pitt and Syracuse.

At least Connecticut has stopped openly groveling to the ACC for the time being.

San Diego St is now openly coveting a spot in the Big 12. I wonder if Craig Thompson has placed a call to Karl Benson for advice on what to do when your conference members are looking to escape and/or being targeted right and left.

A report in the Denver Post this week said Air Force turned down overtures from the Big 12, preferring to be open to the Big East.

And finally, the piece of resistance in this whole conference realignment thing. The single most delusional performance in the history of athletic directorship comes courtesy of Memphis AD RC Johnson.

"We want to try to get ourselves in the best possible place," Johnson said. "Ultimately we would like to be in the SEC. That's where we think we belong geographically. We think we deserve to be."

SEC commissioner Mike Slive issued a statement later that day that said, "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! WOOOOOOOOOOOO! Seriously?"

OK, I made that bit up, but I'm not making the rest of it up.

I mean, you gotta dream big, I guess (although, he doesn't appear to be dreaming B1G), but it's one thing to dream big and another to say it on TV. The Big East doesn't even want them.

  • Steve Spurrier was back in the news yesterday. First, he finally - FINALLY - got sick of Stephen Garcia and kicked him off the team. I have to believe the fact that he wasn't a starter any more had something to do with that.

In order to deflect attention away from that story, he attacked a beat writer from The State about a story he wrote seven months ago and told him to get out of the press conference or it was over. He didn't leave, so Spurrier ended it. Steve is already a candidate for the character and work ethic award this week.

  • Nebraska announced today that DE Jared Crick is done for the year with a torn pectoral muscle.

  • Utah QB Jordan Wynn is also out for the season after the school announced he would undergo shoulder surgery.

  • The CollegeBCS.com user poll is up and going again this year. You can vote early each week. I'll put a link in the top 25 section.

You can see Paul Kislanko's excellent breakdown of our voting each week by clicking on the "Complete Poll" link at the bottom of the top 25.

Apparently a Harris voter snuck into our mix. UL Lafayette got a vote here too.

    Others Receiving votes: Georgia 37; North Carolina 33; Penn State 30; Florida 28; Auburn 22; Washington 20; Southern California 15; Cincinnati 13; TCU 10; Texas Tech 9; Missouri, Tennessee 5; Rutgers, Wake Forest 3; UL Lafayette 1;

  • It's an even more mediocre slate of games this week than last.

Last week, I finished 6-2, including a miss on my upset special. I'm now 35-22 overall, 0-6 on the upset picks, so I'm due to hit one of those. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    * - home team. All games Saturday unless otherwise noted.

    Virginia Tech 24
    *Wake Forest 10
Wake is off to a great start in the league at 3-0, but may be without leading rusher Josh Harris.
    Oklahoma St 41
    *Texas 21
I think I read somewhere that Mack Brown is undefeated the week after a loss to Oklahoma. I expect that streak to get broken. The Cowboys' defense may not score like Oklahoma's did, but their offense can make up for that.
    *Texas Tech 35
    Kansas St 24
The Wildcats are undefeated and one of the feel-good stories of the season so far. Texas Tech has too much firepower for them this week though.
    *Illinois 27
    Ohio St 14
You know how some teams are on upset alert? Ohio St is on "wheels falling off the season" alert. This is a tough game to pick though. The Buckeyes are more potent with Braxton Miller at QB, but as I write this, it's unknown if he can play and how effective he can be if he does. They may not score 14 with Bauserman. They might pull the upset with Miller.
    *Michigan St 28
    Michigan 27
Sparty is always ready when big brother comes to town, and has the defense to slow down Denard Robinson. This is easily the game of the week.
    *Oregon 45
    Arizona St 35
Should be a fun game at Autzen with plenty of offense to go around. The Ducks have more weapons though, even without LaMichael James.
    *Auburn 30
    Florida 20
The Gators certainly won't be facing a top-rated defense this week, for a change, but they still don't have Brantley back, and they will miss him.
    Upset of the Week
    Baylor 31
    *Texas A&M 28 (-8)
RG3 gets back in the Heisman race by pulling this upset on the road.

    This Week in the BCS

    October 10

  • The bowl projections are up. For the first time, I not only have enough eligible teams, I have a couple to spare.

  • Anderson-Hester is out and the chart is complete for this week.

    October 9

  • The Harris poll made its debut today, and it looked very much like the AP poll. LSU is #1, well ahead of Alabama and Oklahoma, which are close together. The top nine teams are the same.

The Harris and coaches' polls differ quite a bit, which is very unusual for this time of year. Teams 4-7 are also in a different order in each poll. At least everyone agrees that Clemson is #8. In fact teams 8-12 are the same.

Someone in the Harris poll gave UL Lafayette a couple of points. They are 5-1, so I suppose we've seen worse votes in this poll before.

Anderson-Hester isn't out yet, but if that rating doesn't change the overall computer order of the top three teams, then each of them will be first, second and third in one of the three BCS components.

  • I normally begin ignoring the AP poll this week, however, this note is too good to pass up. For the first time since 1982, no team from the state of Florida is in the AP top 25. All that talent in that state...

  • We have seven bowl-eligible teams after this weekend. That means the bowl eligibility page has made its first appearance of the season.

  • John Infante of the Bylaw Blog points out that the Big East can't simply add football-only members and maintain its status as an FBS conference according to NCAA guidelines. A FBS conference must have eight schools that are full FBS members, playing at least six men's and eight women's sports, including football and men's and women's basketball.

  • Georgia had the drive of the day at Tennessee. It started late in the third quarter, took 8:21 off the clock, covered a whopping 28 yards and ended in a punt.

The drive started on the Bulldogs own three-yard-line. After picking up four first downs, Georgia was in field goal range at the Tennessee 23. However, the Bulldogs were flagged for holding on first down. That was followed by a one-yard loss on a running play. Then, the flags flew with a fury. Holding. Holding. Holding declined so a personal foul could be accepted. Suddenly, it's second-and-56 for the Bulldogs back at their own 31. That was followed by another one-yard loss and a one-yard gain, leaving fourth-and-56. The punt didn't even reach the first down marker. And the piece of resistance? Georgia committed another personal foul on the punt return.

If Georgia had loss, that drive would have been a mortal lock for the Character and Work Ethic award.

Tennessee lost more than the game. QB Tyler Bray went out of the game in the fourth quarter with what turned out to be a broken thumb. He's expected to miss a month.

  • Who knew John Brantley was that good. Of course, it could also be the fact that Florida has faced Alabama and LSU defenses the last two weeks, but the wheels have come off the Gators' offense. LSU beat Florida 41-11.

This was also the first game where the new taunting rule wiped out a touchdown. Surprisingly, it was LSU's punter who committed the foul, on a fake punt that he ad-libbed. As he was headed for the end zone, he turned a little toward the Florida defenders chasing him and spread out his arms, and that gesture got him the flag. Under any interpretation of the rule, that's a bit cheap. It ended up being a four-point penalty as LSU then settled for a field goal.

  • Oklahoma exposed Texas as a fraud in a 55-17 demolition of the Longhorns. Texas' offense gave up three scores to the Sooner defense. Oklahoma converted five turnovers into 31 points. Texas also had a ridiculous down-and-distance, having to punt on 4th-and-49 after back-to-back sacks resulted in a total of 35 yards in losses.

  • It took Alabama most of a half to get going, but the Tide eventually washed away Vanderbilt 34-0. AJ McCarron had four TD passes.

  • Nebraska came back from 21 points down to beat Ohio St 34-27. It was the biggest comeback win ever for Nebraska. The game changed when Buckeye QB Braxton Miller went out with a sprained ankle and could not return. Ohio State's offense disappeared at that point, opening the door for the Huskers.

  • Denard Robinson three interceptions in the first half, but four TDs after the break (2 rush, 2 pass) in Michigan 42-24 win at Northwestern. Robinson had 450 yards of total offense. This is the sixth 6-0 start since 1975 for Michigan. The Wolverines went to the Rose Bowl the other times.

  • It was the day of injured quarterbacks. Clemson's Tajh Boyd threw for a TD and ran for another before leaving the game with a hip injury in the Tigers' 36-14 win over BC.

  • LaMichael James isn't a quarterback, but he suffered the nastiest injury of the weekend. He dislocated his elbow during the Ducks' 43-15 win over Cal. James had already rushed for 239 yards and a touchdown in the game before the injury.

  • Connor Shaw wasn't filling in for an injured quarterback. He was filling in for Stephen Garcia at South Carolina. He did well too, throwing for 311 yards and four touchdowns in the Gamecocks' 54-3 win over Kentucky. That's the largest margin of victory for USC-East in a SEC game since joining the league.

Kentucky's quarterbacks demonstrated incredible character and work ethic. They completed four passes - to each team. They were a combined 4-26 for all of 16 yards and four interceptions.

  • Brandon Weedon threw five touchdown passes in a short afternoon of work in Oklahoma State's 70-28 win over Kansas. Kansas was giving up almost 45 points per game going into yesterday. That got a lot worse.

  • Sign of the day: In the Kansas St stands during the Missouri game - We Won't Mizz You. KSU beat the Tigers 24-17 to remain undefeated.

  • Baylor ran for almost 400 yards in their 49-26 win over Iowa St. Robert Griffin III had 107 of those yards, but Terrance Ganaway rushed for 200 yards for the Bears. Iowa St had something happen that I had never heard of before. The Cyclones' kicker was flagged for being offside on an on-side kick.

  • Andrew Luck had his biggest day of the year statistically in the Cardinal's 48-7 win over Colorado. He threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

  • Utah's indoctrination into the Pac 12 isn't going so great. The Utes lost at home 35-14 to Arizona St to fall to 0-3 in league play.

  • Wake Forest is a surprising 4-1, 3-0 in the ACC after beating Florida St 35-30.

  • Rutgers is in first place in the Big East after a 34-10 win over Pitt. Panthers QBs were intercepted four times. The first three were from Tino Sunseri, who was benched after that.

  • Syracuse got a FG as time expired to win at Tulane 37-34.

  • Boise St took care of its business by pounding Fresno St, but the Mountain West's "other guys" lost three games by a combined score of 159-52 in non-conference play. Included among those was the only team besides Boise receiving poll votes last week, Air Force, which lost 59-33 to Notre Dame in a game that wasn't as close as the score would indicate.

  • What has happened to East Carolina? Case Keenum lit them up for 304 yards and 3 TDS in a 56-3 loss to Houston. I realize he lights up a lot of teams, but still, 56-3?? Keenum is now second in NCAA history in career passing yards and touchdowns.

  • Southern Miss looks like the stiffest competition for Houston. QB Austin Davis had a big day, completing 21 of 23 passes for 283 yards and three scores in a 63-35 rout of Navy.

  • Bernard Pierce ran for three touchdowns in the Owls' 42-0 whitewash of Ball St, becoming Temple's all time leader in rushing touchdowns.

  • North Texas returned two interceptions for touchdowns ten seconds apart that turned out to be the difference in a 31-17 win over FAU.

  • Two teams got their first marks in the win column this weekend. Oregon St finally got off the schneid against Arizona 37-27, and Western Kentucky picked up a win over Middle Tennessee St 36-33 in double OT.

    October 9

    Player of the Week

Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas was 23-25 for 310 yards and three touchdowns, plus two more scores on the ground in the Hokies 38-35 win over Miami. His 19-yard TD run with just over a minute left was the game winner.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

Texas Tech fans vandalized the Texas A&M busses, spray painting vulgarities, and covering them inside and out with manure. You know, in case two straight weeks of blowing big leads wasn't motivating enough to the Aggies. A&M took down Texas Tech 45-40.

Dishonorable mention to Ohio St WR DeVier Posey. Did he learn nothing from the tattoo brouhaha? Apparently not, because the NCAA suspended him five more games for the old phantom summer job scam. Ohio St AD Gene Smith said the penalty was "harsh" considering his previous five-game suspension. I think it's lenient considering he still doesn't get it.

Boom Herron, who was also caught up in the ink spill, got an additional one-game vacation for his part in this one too.

    Palm Readings

    October 4

  • It's been a busy week so far. And an angry one.

  • Let's start on the field. Illinois suspended starting nutjob (and LB) Jonathan Brown for this week's game against Indiana. The AP report said he kneed a Northwestern player "between plays." It was actually between the legs. ouchie. It turns out that is a violation of the Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement , which states very clearly in commandment II that "there shall be no intentional knee-to-nut contact."

  • Nebraska DT Chase Rome was cited by Madison police after he destroyed a paper towed dispenser in the Madison airport after the Cornhuskers loss at Wisconsin last week.

  • Sort of Big Ten related: Meghan Rees, the sister of Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees, was arrested for public intoxication after starting a fight in the stands during the Irish 38-10 win over Purdue last week. There was a fight in the crowd during the early part of the game, and Meghan Rees was the only one arrested.

  • West Virginia coach Dana Holgerson was upset that a sizeable chunk of the Mountaineer fan base decided to skip last week's thrilling 55-10 win over Bowling Green.

"You only get seven opportunities a year, what's so hard about it?" Holgorsen said. "Is it too cold? It wasn't too cold for our players. So why did we have 20,000 less people than we had last week (vs LSU)."

"The funny part about it is we were all talking two weeks ago about how much of a difference the fans and crowd make to LSU," Holgorsen said. "Well, LSU played well in front of 62,000 of our people and they turned around went home and played a 1-4 Kentucky team at noon and had 95,000 people. All I heard was how much this meant to everybody across the state of West Virginia and this was the NFL team here in town and we're going to be there to support you. Having 40,000 people at a game isn't doing that."

We'll see if UConn is a better draw this week.

  • And of course, from the rivalry division, TCU coach Gary Patterson is pretty honked off at SMU, which beat his Frogs 40-33 last week. Patterson was mad about calls made during the game (by the C-USA crew), the way some Mustang players acted after the game, and some of SMU coach June Jones' postgame comments.

"Jones said we never change," Patterson said. "I think June Jones is 1-8 against TCU since he was at Hawaii. I don't think he's changed that much either. ... I don't go there." Except for just going there, of course.

Patterson says he's done playing nice also. "We're going to go on about our business, but they're not going to get the same help anymore - not about a ballgame, not about conferences, not about anybody. They're getting no help from Gary Patterson, period," Patterson said.

  • SMU, for it's part, is now offering a $40.33 ticket package for the last four Mustang home games. I love rivalries.

  • It wasn't just angry, it was also stupid.

Ohio St suspended RB Boom Herron, WR DeVier Posey and OL Marcus Hall for the Nebraska game this week because they accepted too much money for too little work at summer jobs. Herron and Posey have yet to play this season because they were also part of the tattoo parlor scandal and served five-game suspensions for that.

Ohio St AD Gene Smith reiterated that there isn't a "systemic" problem with compliance there. This is the third, maybe fourth time, since December we've been told there is no systemic problem at Ohio St. If you have to say it that often, then you have a systemic problem.

Thankfully, we have OSU president E. Gordon Gee to keep us amused. He said that, "we are the poster child for compliance." I think I just wet myself laughing.

My friend and CBS colleague Dennis Dodd tweeted that if OSU is the poster child for compliance, "it's a wanted poster."

And finally, we have our weekly conference realignment story. This week, Missouri's board of curators gave the school president permission to deal with conference issues. This is the same thing that happened at Texas A&M before it left for the SEC, and at Oklahoma, before it left for...oh, wait, the Sooners are still around.

So, Mizzou plans to "explore our options." That shouldn't take to long. I don't think there are any. Many assume that the school is headed for the SEC. Maybe so, but I'm not buying it. The rhetoric from SEC folks is much more negative than when A&M was trying to find itself. I could be wrong, but I think Missouri will find out fast its only friends are where they currently live, in the Big 12.

  • One time starting QB Garrett Gilbert is transferring out of Texas.

Last week, I finished 4-5, including a miss on my upset special. I'm now 29-20 overall, 0-5 on the upset picks. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    This Week in the BCS

    October 4

  • Late last night, the Anderson-Hester ratings debuted. They have been added to the chart, which is final now. Also, with the addition of those ratings, I am now throwing out the highest and lowest rating for each team.

    October 2

  • Due to an acute case of UHSE, today's column is posted much later than it was written.

  • Bowl projections are now up. The chart is still waiting on Anderson-Hester.

  • It's getting so football is like basketball. No lead is ever safe.

For the second week in a row, Texas A&M snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. This time, they blew an 18-point lead to Arkansas in Dallas and lost 42-38.

Kansas scored the first 20 points of the game against Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders stormed back to win 45-34 to remain undefeated.

Dan Persa returned at quarterback for Northwestern and threw 4 TD passes, but Illinois still beat the Cats 38-35. AJ Jenkins was a player of the week candidate with 12 catches for 268 yards and three scores. NU blew 18-point second half lead.

In a rare moment of competence, Memphis started out with a 17-0 lead on Middle Tenn St, but the Blue Raiders came back to win 38-31.

SMU blew a 17-point second half lead, but bounced back to beat TCU 40-33 in OT. It was just the second win for SMU over a ranked opponent since it received the death penalty.

Navy came back from 18 down in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but lost in OT when they were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after scoring a touchdown. That forced the extra point attempt back 15 yards, and Air Force blocked it. AFA scored and converted their PAT after that to end the game.

Washington State scored twice in the last three minutes to erase a 10-point deficit and beat Colorado 31-27.

  • This even extends to the polls. Landry Jones threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns in Oklahoma's 62-6 rout of Ball St. Despite that, the Sooners still lost ground in the polls.

They are still #1 in the one that counts, the coaches poll, but they fell to third in the AP.

Alabama snuck past LSU for #2 after the Tide smacked Florida 38-10. Trent Richardson ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Gator QB John Brantley was knocked out of the game with a knee injury in the second quarter.

I realize Wisconsin is operating at a high level right now, but Nebraska's black shirts got pantsed by the Badgers in a 48-17 loss. Russell Wilson threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and Montee Ball ran for 151 and four scores, as Wisconsin just shredded the Huskers. The Badgers are now up to 5th in the coaches poll, one point behind Stanford.

Speaking of Stanford, Andrew Luck threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and also had a spectacular one-handed catch as a receiver on a trick play, in the Cardinal's 45-19 win over UCLA.

OK. I believe in Clemson now. It's hard not to be impressed with a 23-3 win at Virginia Tech. It was the first time since 1995 that the Hokies didn't score a TD at home. The coaches believe too - the Tigers are now 8th.

  • Georgia Tech is 5-0 for the first time since it's 1990 national championship season after beating NC State 45-35.

  • Jordan Jefferson returned for LSU and even though Jarrett Lee started and played most of the way, Jefferson scored on a 1-yard QB sneak in LSU's 35-7 win over Kentucky.

  • Who would have thought Auburn would be in a defensive struggle, much less win one. Win one they did though, when Barrett Trotter hit Philip Lutzenkirchen (my favorite name in college football) with the go-ahead TD pass with about 1:30 left to beat USC-East 16-13. Auburn's D held Marcus Lattimore to only 66 yards rushing.

The Gamecocks were supposed to wear their special Wounded Warrior unis against Auburn, but the refs made them change after warmups because they could not read the numbers.

  • Texas is apparently still trying to get settled at QB. Case McCoy started and finished, but David Ash did most of the heavy lifting in a 37-14 win at Iowa St. Ash had two touchdown passes for the Longhorns, who remain undefeated.

  • Baylor QB Robert Griffin III had another fabulous statistical day, with 346 yards and 5 touchdowns, but his one interception led to Kansas State's game-winning FG in a 36-35 Wildcat win.

  • I was surprised to see that Michigan St leads the nation in total and passing defense (don't pay too much attention to early season stats). Yesterday's 10-7 win at Ohio St, a team with two equally inept QBs, won't hurt those rankings.

  • Despite their best efforts (two Tommy Rees passes hit Purdue DBs in the hands), Notre Dame finally had a turnover-free game in a 38-10 whipping of the Boilers.

  • Washington beat Utah 31-14 in the first ever Pac 12 home game for the Utes. Utah QB Jordan Wynn did not play in the second half after injuring his non-throwing shoulder.

  • Weekly Karma: Syracuse RB Antwon Bailey fumbled the ball away in its OT possession against Rutgers to seal a 19-16 Scarlet Knight's win. Replays showed that Bailey was probably down when he fumbled, but the call was upheld. Toledo enjoys a little schadenfreude (and, earlier, a 36-13 win over Temple).

  • Pitt RB Ray Graham put in an early bid for player of the week when he ran for 226 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-14 win over USF.

  • Alex Carder threw for 479 yards and five scores to lead Western Michigan to a 38-31 win at UConn. A-C-C! A-C-C!

  • In the first game ever without a single tackle recorded (at least not while I was watching), Houston beat UTEP 49-42 Thursday night. The teams combined for 1248 yards of total offense.

  • Utah St suffered another gut-wrenching loss when BYU went 96 yards in just over two minutes to score the winning touchdown in a 27-24 win. If games were 59 minutes long, the Aggies would be 4-0. USU also blew leads late at Auburn, and against Colorado St by giving up touchdowns in the final minute, and lost all three games (CSU in OT).

  • The primary hang up with the Mountain West getting AQ status is that the league has no depth. There is an enormous dropoff from the top team or two to the rest of the pack.

After TCU lost to SMU this week, the Frogs went from ranked to having no votes at all in either poll. The only MWC team besides Boise receiving any voter love right now is Air Force. TCU was supposed to be Boise's other marquee game (after Georgia). It's not looking that way at the moment.

This week, besides the TCU loss, San Jose St snapped a 16-game road losing streak with a 38-31 win at Colorado St. Also, New Mexico lost to NM St 48-24. The league is lucky AFA escaped against Navy.

UNLV and New Mexico are two of the five worst teams in I-A. Colorado St is easily in the bottom 20. This is what is holding the league back. C-USA has a better record against AQ conference schools (MWC is only 2-8), and the Mountain West is the only league that has suffered two losses to I-AA teams.

There are still some non-conference games left, but other than Air Force at Notre Dame this week, none really give the league a chance to make a positive impression.

    Player of the Week

Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson and his favorite target, WR Jarius Wright, share the award this week. Wilson shattered the school record by throwing for 510 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hogs to a 42-38 win over Texas A&M. Wright caught 13 balls for 281 of those yards and one score.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

Isn't Arizona's not-for-much-longer coach Mike Stoops a defensive guy? You wouldn't know it by his team. Matt Barkley threw for a school record 468 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead USC to a 48-41 win over the Wildcats. Arizona has now lost eight in a row to I-A teams, and hasn't held a I-A opponent below 37 points yet this season.

  • The NCAA may be back in business in Knoxville after a Yahoo! Sports report this week that said former assistant to Lane Kiffin, Willie Garza, paid for a recruit and his mother to fly to Knoxville for an unofficial visit. That's a no-no. He funneled the money through Willie Lyles. Lyles is the "scout" whose transactions with Oregon have the Ducks in the NCAA soup.

  • We have had a couple peaceful days on the conference realignment front, thankfully. NCAA grand poobah Mark Emmert had a four-letter word with athletic directors on Monday over this whole mess.

“The specter of the past couple weeks of conference realignment has not been a healthy thing. The world’s convinced…that all this is about money. I didn’t read many of us stepping up and saying that this will work really well for student-athletes...It was all about the deal."

    Pot, meet kettle.

  • Big East presidents will meet in Washington this weekend to talk about the future of that league. Pitt and Syracuse are already on their way out. UConn, after seeing how well Missouri's campaign for the Big Ten worked, has decided to adopt the same strategy to get into the ACC. So, some stability is definitely needed.

  • On the BCS front, week five usually means the debut of the Anderson-Hester ratings. I don't know if we'll see them on Sunday, but we should see them sometime this week.

Also, Mike Slive is making noise about getting the two-team limit per conference for BCS games revoked. That rule exists to help spread the money around more evenly, and repealing it would only help the SEC and Big Ten, which far and away have the most desirable teams for bowl games.

  • Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is back on the job as of today after spending some time in the Mayo Clinic getting checked out for seizures.

  • While tooling around today, I came across the New Mexico game notes for this week's game with New Mexico St, and they still list a section for "Mike Locksley Media Opportunities."

  • The CollegeBCS.com user poll is up and going again this year. You can vote early each week. I'll put a link in the top 25 section.

You can see Paul Kislanko's excellent breakdown of our voting each week by clicking on the "Complete Poll" link at the bottom of the top 25.

  • Here's hoping we get as exciting of a week as we got last week. Not likely, but we can always hope.

Last week, I finished 7-2, including a miss on my upset special. I'm now 25-15 overall, 0-4 on the upset picks. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

Robert Griffin III might be the top guy on a lot of Heisman ballots if they were cast this week. We said that about Denard Robinson last year, and then he got into conference play, and things went south. Griffin should be up to the task in this one.

The Cyclones are in some pretty high cotton. Texas finally has solved its quarterback issues, and looked very efficient last time out at UCLA.

The Aggies get their first SEC game the week they officially got welcomed into the league. I look for the Aggies defense to bounce back this week after getting torched by Brandon Weedon last week.

Welcome to the Big Ten, Cornhuskers! Here's a ticket to the Mad House. NC State transfer Russell Wilson has given the Badgers a dimension at QB they have never had before, and they are clicking on all cylinders. Nebraska is winning, but unimpressively so far. This Week in the BCS

    September 26

  • The weekly chart is final and the bowl projections are up.

    September 25

  • It's been a busy Sunday.

  • The move of Texas A&M to the SEC is now official. The Aggies begin competition next year.

  • Apparently, I'm not the only one wondering how New Mexico Mike Locksley keeps his job. He has been fired by the school after two-plus seasons and a record of 2-26. Defensive coordinator George Barlow takes over on an interim basis.

  • Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has checked himself into the Mayo Clinic to get more treatment for his seizures. He suffered another one today.

  • LSU's defense wasn't dominating - they gave up 533 yards - but they did force four turnovers in the Tigers 47-21 win at West Virginia. They key play came right after the Mountaineers cut the lead to 27-21 late in the third quarter. Morris Claiborne ran the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and LSU never looked back.

Voters in both polls were impressed, but much more so in the AP, which vaulted the Tigers past Oklahoma to #1. Remember though, the AP doesn't count in the end. The coaches brought LSU a lot closer to #1 Oklahoma and dead even with SEC mate Alabama.

  • Oklahoma hadn't trailed at home since 2007, but spotted Missouri a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles then led them back to a 38-28 win. Jones threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns, all to Broyles, who had 154 of the receiving yards as well.

  • Alabama scored touchdowns on a fake field goal, punt return and interception return in its 38-14 win over Arkansas.

  • POW nominee LaMichael James ran for a 288 yards, and his two touchdowns gave him the Oregon career record in that category, as the Ducks beat Arizona 56-31.

  • Clemson QB Tajh Boyd passed for 344 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers 35-30 win over Florida St. He also ran for a score.

  • It was otherwise not such a great day for the league. Miami lost at home to Kansas St on a fourth down stop at the goal line by the Wildcats with 49 seconds left. That stop was originally ruled a touchdown, but reversed by replay.

Virginia lost at home to Southern Miss. Maryland got drilled by Temple. Even newcomers Pitt and Syracuse lost, at least if you ask Toledo. The Rockets have asked Syracuse to vacate its win, which is described below. That ain't gonna happen.

  • Speaking of Maryland, the Terps whipped out yet another set of ugly unis for the Temple game. There should be a rule that says, other than one each for home and road, you can't have more uniform styles than wins.

  • Penn St QB Matt McGloin threw the first three TD passes of the season for the Nits in a devastating 34-6 win over Eastern Mich. LB Michael Mauti, the team's leading tackler, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. CB D'Anton Lynn suffered an injury in the second half that required him to be strapped to a backboard to be taken off the field.

  • Denard Robinson had 200 yards rushing and three first half touchdowns in Michigan's 28-7 win over coach Brady Hoke's old school, San Diego St.

  • Braxton Miller got his first start at QB for Ohio St in a 37-17 win over Colorado. Miller only completed five of his 13 passes, but two were for touchdowns.

  • Illinois 4-0 for first time since 1961(!) after a harder than expected 23-20 win over Western Michigan.

The bottom of the Big Ten continues to underwhelm. Minnesota lost at home to North Dakota St 37-24. That occurred before coach Jerry Kill's new set of seizures - I'm not necessarily suggesting cause-effect.

Indiana lost at North Texas 24-21. After spotting the Mean Green a 24-0 lead, the Hoosiers tried to come back, but it wasn't enough. It was North Texas' first win over an AQ school since beating Baylor in 2003.

  • Notre Dame overcame two more turnovers, one inside the Pitt 10, to beat the Panthers 15-12. The Irish now have 15 turnovers on the season, and by my count, seven inside their opponents' ten yard line. Only nine I-A teams committed more than 15 turnovers a year ago.

  • Mark Richt may be on the hot seat at Georgia, but at least he can still beat Houston Nutt. Georgia knocked off Ole Miss 27-13.

  • Baylor QB Robert Griffin III continued his remarkable start to the season. He was 29-33 for 338 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-31 win over Rice. For the season, Griffin III has 13 touchdowns and only 12 incompletions.

  • Arizona St saw a 12-point lead disappear in the second half, but bounced back to beat USC 43-22. It was the Sun Devils first win in the series since 1999.

  • Rutgers WR Mohamed Sanu had a huge day with 16 catches for 176 yards and two scores in the Scarlet Knights' 38-26 win over Ohio.

  • Louisiana did what Louisville could not - slow down TY Hilton and beat Florida International. Hilton, who left last week's game with an injury, was held to three catches for 32 yards in the Panthers' 36-31 loss to the Ragin' Cajuns.

  • I don't normally mention games where a I-A team beats a I-AA, but Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz threw for 420 yards and seven TDs in the first half in the Warriors 56-14 win over UC Davis. I don't care who you play, those are gaudy numbers.

  • Southern Utah's offense never had to take the field. CWE nominee UNLV had three interceptions returned for touchdowns against them in a 41-16 loss to the I-AA Thunderbirds. For those of you scoring at home, that's SUU defense 18, UNLV offense 16. UNLV was one of two Mountain West teams to lose to I-AA foes this week. yikes.

    Top 25/Awards

    September 25

    Player of the Week

  • Brandon Weedon threw for a school-record 438 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Oklahoma St back from a 17-point halftime deficit and beat Texas A&M 30-29 at Kyle Field.

Honorable mention to Temple RB Bernard Pierce, who ran for 149 yards and a school-record five touchdowns in the Owls' 38-7 pounding of Maryland.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

There was so much competition for the award this week that I have split it into two parts.

  • On the field: The refs at the Syracuse-Toledo game blew the easiest call they have to make - whether an extra point is good. Now, I admit it's not the easiest when the ball is passing right over a goal post, but that was not the case here. It went in front of the post and wide left. There is a ref standing right under the post. How can you not see that??

To add insult to injury, despite a very clear replay showing the ball passing in front of the post, the replay official let the call stand.

This mistake gave Syracuse a late 30-27 lead instead of 29-27. Toledo then drove down and tied the game with a field goal as time expired. That should have been the game-winner, but instead, sent the game to OT, where Syracuse won 33-30.

The Big East issued a statement after the game that said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Boy, did we screw that up! Sorry!! We really hope that doesn't happen again."

Toledo also issued a statement, and again, I'm paraphrasing, that said, "You can stuff your sorries in a sack, mister!!"

  • Off the field: Actually, this has an on the field component too. How would you like to be New Mexico coach Mike Locksley this morning?

According to a report from Albuquerque TV station KOB, moments before Locksley's team's game with Sam Houston St, Joshua Butts, 19, was arrested for aggravated DWI, minor possession of alcohol, reckless driving and driving without a license after nearly hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk. This was bad news for Locksley because Butts claimed to be a recruit and was driving Locksley's car.

A few hours later, his team lost to Sam Houston St 48-45 in OT. The Bearkats were flagged after the game for piling on.

Locksley, who is in his third season as the Lobos' coach, has had other issues. Before he ever coached a game, a former football administrative assistant named him in a complaint to the EEOC because of age discrimination and sexual harassment. He sued her for defamation of character a few months later. Everything was eventually settled out of court.

You have to wonder how much longer Locksley will be the coach at New Mexico. In two-plus seasons, he has two wins and two significant legal issues. That's not the kind of win-to-legal-problems ratio that most universities look for in a head coach.

    Palm Readings

    September 21

  • The conference movement rumor mill is still working overtime, but there was some actual news yesterday. The Pac 12 has decided to stay at 12 teams.

For now. "For now" is implied in every decision conferences/schools make. For example - Texas A&M is moving to the SEC. For now. With Oklahoma being rebuffed - the Pac 12 statement came just hours after Oklahoma saw the writing on the wall and issued its own statement that it intends to work on reforming the Big 12, beginning with the replacement of commissioner Dan Beebe - there are reportedly some behind-the-scenes conversations trying to convince A&M to return to the Big 12.

Reports late tonight say that Beebe will be replaced, likely tomorrow, with former Big 8 commissioner Chuck Neinas taking over on an interim basis.

Also, with the Big East scrambling, you have to question whether TCU will still come over, or stay in the Mountain West. Reports late tonight say TCU is sticking with the Big East. Um, for now.

Speaking of the Big East, the league is making an effort to add Navy and Air Force as football-only replacements for Pitt and Syracuse. The nice thing about that, if it happens, is that the Big East adds a couple of nice programs without damaging another major conference.

I think the Armageddon scenarios are on hold. For now. The Big East has to do something, and the Texas A&M/SEC/Big 12 issue still needs resolution, which could end up forcing another move, but it looks like the massive wave of changes is on hold.

    This Week in the BCS

    September 19

  • The bowl projections are up this morning. I'm still missing a team.

  • I am also still waiting on Massey's numbers to complete the chart.

    September 18

  • This column is waiting for the Oklahoma St-Tulsa game to finish.

  • Well, nobody saw this coming. The ACC announced today the addition of Pitt and Syracuse, a move which happened very quickly this weekend. They did not announce the date the two would join the league. The Big East requires 27 months notice, which would put them into December, 2013, however it is expected to actually occur much sooner.

This is the first time in this recent flurry of moves that a league has added teams that will help basketball more that it does football.

The Big East will be down to seven football teams after this move, so it's safe to assume that the league will be looking to replace Pitt and Syracuse. Most likely, they'll target some of the less desirable Big 12 teams (meaning not Texas or Oklahoma).

  • There are a lot of rumors going around. A lot of people are putting getting the story first ahead of getting it right. Read everything with a jaundiced eye.

For example, there's a rumor that the creation of the Pac 16 is imminent. They say Texas and the league have figured out a compromise to account for the Longhorn Network. Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St would join the Longhorns in the move.

However, several (believed to be a majority) Pac 12 presidents are said to quite happy with the current configuration and not at all interested in expanding further. Certainly, you have to believe Colorado doesn't want to see Texas again after leaving the Big 12, in part, to get away from them. Larry Scott may not be able to sell this one.

It is possible that nothing more happens. It is possible that only Texas A&M leaves the Big 12, to be joined in the SEC by someone like West Virginia, and that things stop there. It's also possible that we could have Armageddon, which sees the end of the Big 12 and the overhaul of the Big East. One thing I feel pretty confident that we won't see - further expansion in the Big Ten. If we're going to four 16-team super conferences, the Big Ten won't be one of them.

    Stay tuned.

  • There was action on the field. The top game of the day saw #1 Oklahoma win an ugly, but entertaining game at Florida St 23-13. Landry Jones probably didn't help his Heisman campaign with 199 yards passing and two interceptions, but he did have a sweet TD pass to Kenny Stills (pretty sweet on his end too) late in the game that put it away.

  • LSU used a typically smothering defense, and a surprisingly good performance from QB Jarrett Lee to beat Mississippi St 19-6 on Friday. Lee was 21-27 for 213 yards and a score. The Bulldogs could only manage 193 yards of total offense against the Tigers.

  • Kellen Moore had another huge night on Friday against Toldeo, throwing for 455 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-15 win.

  • In a CWE-nominated performance - and perhaps it should have won - Kansas gave up 768 yards of total offense. 604 on the ground, in a 66-24 loss at Georgia Tech. Those numbers were school records for the Yellow Jackets, and this is a school that once scored 222 points in a game.

  • Auburn's 17-game winning streak ended at Clemson 38-24. Clemson put up 624 yards of offense on the defending champs. Guess the Tigers really miss Nick Fairly.

  • Notre Dame finally overcame its self-destructive tendencies and beat Michigan St 31-13. The Irish defense held MSU to only 29 yards rushing.

  • Ohio St QBs Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller were a combined 4 for 18 for 35 yards with an interception in their 24-6 loss at Miami. The Buckeyes are now out of the rankings for first time since 2004.

  • Iowa was down 21 late in the third quarter, and 17 early in the fourth quarter, before coming back to beat Pitt 31-27. James Vandenberg threw for 162 yards and 3 TDs in the last 12 minutes to lead the comeback. It is the second week in a row that a B1G team came back from 17 down in the 4th quarter to win (Michigan-ND). After the game, Pitt tried to defect to the ACC, but was embarrassed to learn that there are no ACC embassies in Iowa.

  • That was not the best comeback of the day. That belongs to Houston, which trailed Louisiana Tech 34-7 late in the third quarter. The Cougars then scored four TDs in the last 20 minutes to win 35-34. Houston QB Case Keenum threw for 351 yards, three touchdowns and two picks, including a 32-yard TD pass with less that two minutes left that was the game-winner.

  • Maryland almost pulled off a big comeback as well. The Terps were down 34-10 to West Virginia and were able to get within 3, but Danny O'Brien's 3rd INT ended their comeback hopes. Mountaineer QB Geno Smith 36-49, career high 388 yards.

  • Russell Wilson threw for 347 yards and 3 TDs to lead Wisconsin to a 49-7 win over Northern Illinois at Soldier Field in Chicago.

  • Florida overcame 16 penalties, six of which were pass interference, to beat Tenn 33-23. The Vols lost WR Justin Hunter for the season with a torn ACL.

  • Stanford QB Andrew Luck was 20-31 for 325 yards and 2 scores in the Cardinal's 37-10 win over Arizona.

  • Illinois picked up its first win over a ranked opponent since its Rose Bowl season by beating Arizona St 17-14.

  • Oklahoma St leads Tulsa 31-6 at the half. Both teams are power-napping in the locker room.

  • OSU-Tulsa wasn't the only lightning-affected game. Baylor won a 3-quarter game against Stephen F. Austin 48-0. The game called because of lightning. Through two games Baylor QB Robert Griffin III has eight touchdowns and eight incompletions.

  • The last time Texas was in Pasadena, Colt McCoy got hurt, and the Longhorns lost to Alabama in the BCS Title Game. This time, Case McCoy threw two TD passes and Texas was a 49-20 winner over UCLA.

  • Here is a fact that surprised me when I saw it: North Carolina is 1-0 in the ACC for the first time in 11 years after beating Virginia 28-17.

  • Penn St hasn't lost to Temple in 70 years (in JoePa's tenth year at PSU). This year, the Nits needed a 1-yard TD plunge with 2:42 left to keep that streak alive with a 14-10 win.

  • Florida International is 3-0 after beating UCF 17-10. FIU star WR TY Hilton left the game in the first half with a hamstring injury.

  • UNLV took advantage of four Hawaii fumbles to beat the Warriors 40-20. This was the biggest upset of the day. Hawaii was a 20.5 point favorite.

  • Coach Jerry Kill was on the sidelines for Minnesota's 29-23 win over Miami-Ohio. Kill suffered a seizure late in the Gophers' game last week with New Mexico St.

  • Aztecs RB Ronnie Hillman ran for 191 yards and 4 TDs in San Diego State's 42-24 win over Washington St. Marcus Wilson had six catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns in a losing cause.

  • Matt Barkley threw for a school-record five TDs in USC's 38-17 win over Syracuse.

  • It took three weeks, but Baylor is now ahead of TCU in the coaches' poll.

  • Florida St dropped down to 15th in the coaches' poll and 14th in the AP poll after losing to Oklahoma. I think that was a bit harsh.

  • And finally, some breaking news, Oklahoma St beat Tulsa 59-33. The game was supposed to start at 9 PM local time, but didn't start until after midnight because of a lightning delay. The game finished didn't finish until 3:55 AM.

    Player of the Week

  • Marcus Lattimore ran for 246 yards and three touchdowns to help South Carolina hold off Navy 24-21.

  • Honorable mention to Texas Tech QB Seth Doege, who set a record for best completion percentage in a game (min. 40 attempts). He was 40-44 (90.2%) for 401 yards and five touchdowns in the Red Raiders win over New Mexico.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

  • BYU turned the ball over a whopping seven times in its 54-10 loss to in-state rival Utah. Notre Dame is jealous. John White ran for 174 yards and three TDs for Utah.

  • Dishonorable mention to the kickers at Bowling Green and Boston College. Each missed extra points in one-point losses. The Eagles' kicker also banged a 23-yard attempt off the upright that would have won the game. The Falcons' extra point miss came with less than a minute to go. Duke was the beneficiary of the BC kicking woes in a 20-19 win. Bowling Green lost to Wyoming 28-27.

Due to a complete brain cramp, I neglected to put BYU-Utah in this week's picks. It's there now.

    September 14

  • We're still in a holding pattern with regard to the implosion of the Big 12. SEC commissioner Mike Slive talked this week about how the league is preparing for 13-team scheduling, in anticipation of Texas A&M coming aboard. Oklahoma has been rumored to be flirting with the Pac 12. Texas, which has a networking problem when it comes to switching conferences, may be trying to land in the ACC if it looks like the Big 12 will die. And Florida State is forming a committee on campus to look into conference realignment, whatever that means.

    Stay tuned.

  • Boise State's athletic department got smacked around pretty good by the NCAA this week, with a finding of lack of institutional control, among other things. The football program was a relatively marginal player in this case, which was mostly about women's tennis, but the football team will lose three scholarships per year from 2012-14, plus have practice time reduced.

  • Memphis defensive coordinator Jay Hopson resigned this week after his team gave up 611 yards to Arkansas St last week, and was giving up an average of 628 in its first two games.

  • Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is expected to be on the sidelines this week when the Gophers host Miami-Ohio. Kill suffered seizures near the end of last week's loss to New Mexico St and was hospitalized this week.

I don't really think of September games as BCS elimination games, but surely the loser is in trouble and will need help to get back into the chase. Sooner QB Landry Jones lit up the Noles last year. He probably won't have it quite as easy this time, but he'll be the reason the Sooners win.
    Ohio St 21
    *Miami 17
Is Vegas taking bets on whether there will be more points than ineligible players? Miami has had an extra week to prepare and returns QB Jacory Harris to the lineup. The Buckeyes may have been looking ahead some when they struggled with Toledo last week.

Shouldn't expect to see much D in this game. Might be a battle of Tigers, but they're mostly toothless.
    *Maryland 27
    West Virginia 21
The Terps looked pretty good against Miami. Well, I mean they played well. They looked like crap. Nonetheless, I think they have a chance to do some damage in the ACC. West Virginia can't afford to take the first half off like it did last week.
    Arizona St 31
    *Illinois 30
I flipped the cosmic coin and it came up Sun Devils. If they don't self-destruct - ASU never met a penalty it wouldn't commit - they have the weapons to take down the Illini.
    *Nebraska 24
    Washington 19
The Huskers weren't particularly sharp against Fresno St last week. Washington has had some struggles too. NU stuck it to Washington in the regular season last year, but yawned its way through a rematch in the Holiday Bowl. It's the regular season again.
    Stanford 37
    *Arizona 14
I wonder if the seat under Wildcat coach Mike Stoops is getting a little warm. Arizona is really banged up on defense, plus stud WR Juron Criner may not be ready to go yet after an emergency appendectomy last week.

    *Mississippi St 10, Thr
I like the LSU defense a lot, and a really good defense makes winning on the road so much easier. Tough turnaround for the Bulldogs, having to face the Tigers just five days after playing at Auburn.
    Michigan St 32
    *Notre Dame 25
The Spartans tend to have Notre Dame's number. That's all the Irish need, because their number has been coming up snake eyes so far this season. The most self-destructive team in the country needs to play a whole lot better to beat Sparty.
    *BYU 35
    Utah 31
For the first time, this great rivalry is a non-conference game. Both teams are pretty good, although neither is great, and both are coming off heartbreaking losses. BYU has been running the ball more than we're used to seeing. This might be the time to open it up some.
    Upset of the Week
    Tennessee 35
    *Florida 32 (-9 1/2)
Both teams have shown a lot of offense so far against relatively hapless opponents, although I'd say the Vols' first two foes were less hapless. I think Vol QB Tyler Bray is a guy we'll be talking about a lot before his days at UT are done.

    This Week in the BCS

    September 13

  • It's taken a couple days to get some numbers sorted out, but this week's final chart is now up.

    September 11

  • This column has just recovered a Notre Dame turnover.

  • There should be little movement near the top of the polls this week with the highest rated team to lose being Mississippi St. In the coaches' poll, Boise St and Florida St switched spots, and Wisconsin went by Texas A&M, but the points are still close.

Mississippi St fell eight spots to 25th. Missouri and Penn St dropped out completely.

  • If you did not get to see the 4th quarter of the Michigan-Notre Dame game, BTN (Big Ten Network) is showing it tonight at 7 PM CT. If you can't watch it, record it. You won't believe it. I watched it, and I don't believe it.

Denard Robinson did it to the Irish again. Of course, the Irish did it to themselves too (noted below), but Robinson had 338 yards passing (only 11 completions in 24 tries) with four touchdowns and three picks. He also had 94 yards rushing and a score. Three of the passing touchdowns, the rushing one, and one of the interceptions came in the final quarter.

It was the most exciting finish to a game I ever saw that did not involve my own team.

  • Minnesota coach Jerry Kill collapsed on the sidelines and started suffering seizures with 20 seconds to go in the Gophers' loss to New Mexico St. Paramedics treated him on the field for about 20 minutes, before he was transported to a local hospital. The latest on his condition is that he is stable and improving.

  • It was a great day in the state of Indiana. Purdue, IU and Notre Dame all lost on the last play of the game. Ball St lost getting off the bus.

Purdue's All-American K Carson Wiggs lined up for a chip-shot FG to win, but it was blocked and the Boilers fell to Rice 24-22.

Indiana scored touchdowns off of three straight turnovers to take an 8-point lead over Virginia. The Cavs tied it up late, and with about a minute and a half left, Cam Johnson sacked Edwin Wright-Baker and took the ball out of his hands while he did it. That set up Virginia for an easy game-winning FG as time expired.

Ball St fumbled the opening kickoff and USF returned it for a score just eight seconds into the game - the fastest score ever for the Bulls. The train never stopped after that as USF cruised to a 37-7 win. Before the game, the school honored former AD Lee Roy Selmon, who passed away last week of a stroke.

  • Utah also lost on the last play in its first Pac 12 conference game. The Utes lined up for a potential game-tying FG, but USC blocked it and returned it for a score. It appeared for a moment that we would have our first instance of the celebration penalty wiping off a score. USC was penalized for its bench coming onto the field during the return and the score was nullified, but a couple hours later, the conference reinstated it, saying that the penalty on coaches or bench players is still enforced as a dead-ball penalty after the play. Since the play ended the game, there was no penalty, and USC was declared a 23-14 winner.

  • Mississippi St also could have tied its game on the final play, but Auburn stuffed them from the one-yard line, and unlike Notre Dame, was smart enough not to force a fumble, so the Tigers held on for a 41-34 win.

  • Virginia Tech overcame two turnovers and 12 penalties to beat East Carolina 17-10 and give coach Frank Beamer his 200th win at the school.

  • Okla St QB Brandon Weedon hit on 22 of first 23 passes, ending up 42-53 overall, for 397 yards and two TDs in Cowboys 34-10 win over Arizona.

  • Missouri coach Gary Pinkel called two timeouts to freeze his OWN kicker on the final play of regulation. The kick missed and the Tigers lost 37-30 in OT at Arizona St.

  • AJ McCarron appears to have won the QB battle at Alabama. He played the whole way in the 27-11 win at Penn St. Trent Richardson had 111 yards rushing and two scores for the Tide.

  • Case Keenum is back in fighting form. He was 26-41 for 458 yards and five scores in Houston's 43-28 win at North Texas.

  • Stanford QB Andrew Luck threw for 290 yards and 5 TDs (well, one to the other team) in a 44-14 win at Duke.

  • Darron Thomas tied a school record with six TD passes as Oregon took out some frustration on Nevada in a 69-20 win. Didn't Nevada used to be good?

  • Maybe the best day by a QB was put in by Tennessee's Tyler Bray. He was 34-41 for 405 yards and four touchdowns in the air, and ran for another score in a 45-23 win over Cincinnati.

  • Stop me if you've heard this one before McCoy came in and hit Shipley with a couple big passes to spark Texas to a win. This time, is Case McCoy and Jaxon Shipley who hooked up a couple times on what turned out to be the winning touchdown drive in a 17-16 win over BYU.

  • TCU bounced back from the loss to Baylor with a 35-19 win over Air Force. Many considered the Falcons to be sleepers in the MWC, but the game not as close as score would indicate. AFA got a lovely parting gift touchdown on the final play of the game.

  • Memphis is making its case that it is the worst team in I-A this year. The Tigers gave up 611 yards to Arkansas...State and lost 47-3.

  • The new bowl projections are up. More numbers will appear as they become available.

    Top 25/Awards

    September 11

    Player of the Week

  • Florida International WR TY Hilton caught 7 passes for 201 yards and two long touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 24-17 win at Louisville, which was the first ever for the school against an AQ opponent.

  • Honorable mention to South Carolina DE Melvin Ingram. He scored twice, once on a short fumble return, and also on a 68-yard run on a fake punt. He's the upback in the punt formation. He's also on the hands team for onside kicks, and he recovered one of those late in the 45-42 win over Georgia as well.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

  • I don't like giving out awards to the same team/player consecutive weeks, not even to Notre Dame, but the Irish turned the ball over five more times, including twice more 10 yard line, in a remarkable 35-31 loss at Michigan. The Irish blew a 17-point 4th quarter lead, got it back, then blew it again in one of the most memorable finishes to a game you'll ever see.

  • Dishonorable mention to the Big Ten, which had this award locked up until ND imploded. Penn St didn't have much for Alabama in a 27-11 loss. Minnesota lost to New Mexico St at home. Purdue's All-American kicker had a chip shot blocked on the final play of the game to seal a 24-22 loss at Rice. Iowa needed three overtimes to lose at Iowa St. Indiana found an especially gut-wrenching way to lose to Virginia. Even in victory, the league didn't always look good. Both Nebraska and Ohio St struggled to beat teams they should have handled better. It's not a great year for the Big Ten - we all knew that going in - but this week wasn't exactly legendary, outside of Ann Arbor, anyway.

    September 7th

  • Oh, my gosh! Is it already Wednesday again? Seems like last week just ended.

  • Just when it seemed the Texas A&M-to-the-SEC story was about to reach its conclusion, another hurdle has appeared.

The SEC presidents voted unanimously to invite TAMU to the league, but with one condition. They wanted a waiver from the Big 12 and its members that it would not sue the SEC because of the move. So far, Baylor and Iowa St are refusing to waive their rights. Stay tuned.

If A&M ends up in the SEC, the league will be looking to acquire a 14th team. The ones at the top of the rumored lists are Missouri and West Virginia.

What a coup that would be for Mizzou if it ends up in the SEC! After enduring a very public humiliation when it threw itself at the Big Ten, only to be rejected, to land in the SEC would be the ultimate in face-saves.

  • Miami announced that Jacory Harris will start at QB this week. Notre Dame is also switching QBs, going with Tommy Rees against Michigan.

  • As always, I'll be picking the games of interest each week. Last week, I finished 7-3, including a miss on my upset specials. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    This Week in the BCS

    September 6

  • This column has been delayed by lightning.

Actually, several games were delayed or truncated by lightning. Michigan's win over Western Michigan, and West Virginia's victory were shortened after lengthy lightning delays. Iowa, Notre Dame and Tennessee also had lightning delayed games. Eastern Michigan moved its game from Saturday to Sunday to avoid the storms. And as I mentioned earlier, Connecticut's game with Fordham was delayed because of hurricane Irene.

  • The bowl projections are up. I'm two teams short of 70 needed to fill the games.

  • Oregon was one of the biggest losers in the polls this week after its 40-27 loss to LSU. The Ducks turned the ball over four times, and the stingy Tiger defense held RB LaMichael James to only 54 yards on the ground. This is the second straight game an SEC defense has shut down Oregon's high-flying offense. It'll be a long climb back to the top of the polls for the defending runner-up.

  • Notre Dame and Georgia also fell hard in the rankings, which was to be expected. USF and Baylor were the biggest winners.

  • The defending champion almost got beat too, in what would have been a much more embarrassing loss. Auburn scored twice in the final two minutes, recovering an onside kick in between, to come back to beat Utah St 42-38.

  • Boise St beat Georgia in Atlanta 35-21. Kellen Moore got his Heisman campaign off to a great start, going 28-34 for 261 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos are now rooting big-time for the Bulldogs because this is the marquee non-conference game on their schedule.

  • TCU didn't do Boise or the Mountain West any favors in its 50-48 loss to Baylor. The MWC wants to make a case for AQ status this offseason and cannot afford any slippage if it wants a favorable appeal. And of course, the perception of Boise State's schedule will depend largely on how the league does out of conference. The MWC went 1-2 vs I-A opponents this week.

  • Michigan LB Brandon Herron scored twice, once on a fumble return, and also on a 94-yard interception return in the Wolverines' 34-10 win over WMU. That was one of at least three 90+ yard defensive returns for scores this weekend. USF did it at ND (read below) and Ole Miss DB Charles Sawyer ran an interception back 96 yards for a TD in the Rebels 14-13 loss to BYU.

  • There were 38 games on the calendar this weekend featuring I-A teams hosting I-AA teams, and every one of them was scheduled by the I-A team with an easy win and a home gate in mind. Most of the time, that's what happened, but...

Oregon St lost to Sacramento St 29-28 in OT after the Hornets converted a two-point play in the first overtime. OSU lost despite freshman RB Malcolm Agnew rushing for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

Duke K Will Snyderwine missed FG attempts of 28 and 60 yards in the final two minutes in the Blue Devils' 23-21 loss to Richmond. It's the third time Richmond has won at Duke in the last six years. Time for the Blue Devils to find another patsy.

Iowa St, Kansas St, Washington, Wyoming also got serious scares from I-AA teams, and UTEP needed OT to beat Stony Brook.

  • #1 Oklahoma QB Landry Jones and WR Ryan Broyles piled up big numbers in a 47-14 win over Tulsa. Jones was 35-47 for 375 yards and Broyles caught 14 passes for 158 yards in the Sooners' win. RB Dominique Whatley handled most of the scoring with 131 yards rushing and four TDs.

  • Stanford QB Andrew Luck, the consensus Heisman favorite, threw for a pedestrian 171 yards and two TDs, and ran for another score, in the Cardinal's 57-3 win over San Jose St.

  • South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia watched the first quarter-and-a-half from the bench and saw his team trailing ECU 17-0. Garcia came in and scored twice on the ground and added a TD pass to spark a 56-37 victory. RB Marcus Lattimore added 112 yards and three TDs on the ground. It's safe to assume Garcia will start this week. Unless he gets suspended for something.

  • Texas A&M began what may be its final Big 12 campaign with a 46-14 win over SMU. The Aggies took advantage of early SMU mistakes to jump out to a big lead and cruised from there. Texas A&M could be voted into the SEC this week.

  • The Russell Wilson Era, albeit only one season, got off to a good start at Wisconsin. He was 10-13 for 255 yards and two TDs passing, and also ran twice for 62 yards and another score in the Badgers' 51-17 win over UNLV.

  • The Kevin Wilson Era at Indiana - not so much. The Hoosiers lost 27-20 to Ball St at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. QB Keith Wenning led the way for the Cardinals with 23-29 passing for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Houston QB Case Keenum was 30-40 for 310 yards and a touchdown in his first game back since his knee injury. The Cougars beat UCLA 38-34.

  • USC WR Robert Woods had a huge day with 17 catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the Trojans' 19-17 win over Minnesota. 17 catches is a school record. USC coach Lane Kiffin went for 2 after the first two TDs - both failed.

  • Southern Miss, one of the favorites in C-USA, needed a 49-yard FG with just over two minutes left to beat Louisiana Tech.

  • NIU QB Chandler Harnish only completed 12 passes, but five were for TDs in Huskies' 49-26 win over Army.

  • Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz, the nation's leading passer a year ago, ran for 121 yards and 3 TDs to lead the Warriors to a 34-17 win over Colorado. Moniz only ran for 102 yards total last season.

  • Texas beat Rice 34-9, but the highlight of the game was when the Rice band took the field at halftime and formed $EC during the show.

    Player of the Week

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III put on quite a show against what used to be a pretty good TCU defense Friday night. He completed 21 of 27 passes for 359 yards and five touchdowns in the Bears exciting 50-48 win. It was Baylor's first win over a ranked opponent since 2004, and the most points given up by TCU since 2005.

    Character and Work Ethic Award

  • Notre Dame turned the ball over five times, including three inside the USF 10 yard line, in a 23-20 loss at home to the Bulls. One of those turnovers was returned 94 yards for a USF touchdown. Another came right after an Irish touchdown was nullified by a penalty. Now, Notre Dame has three of their next four on the road, and their margin for error to qualify for the BCS just got a lot smaller.

  • Dishonorable mention to uniform designers. Oregon has been supplanted as the trendsetter in gaudiness. Georgia's uniforms were an abomination, but nothing compared to the eyesore that Maryland trotted out in last night. Half, black and yellow, half red and white, they looked like a Batman villain from the 70s TV show. I assume the kids must love them. Kids love wearing their pants down below their butts too - I hope that's a trend we don't see in football anytime soon.

  • Finally, the games are here! But, first! One more piece of off-the-field news: Texas A&M made official today what was the worst-kept secret of the last month. The Aggies are withdrawing from the Big 12 and, according to school President R. Bowen Loftin, making an "application to join another athletic conference."

That's great news for the Sun Belt, where A&M figures to dominate!

I'm just joshing you, of course. They're going to the SEC, where they will be an awkward 13th wheel until the league scrounges up someone else.

  • Miami will be without eight players which were suspended at least one game by the NCAA for their involvement in the Nevin Shaprio fiasco. Included among those is QB Jacory Harris.

  • We have already had our first weather postponement of the season. Connecticut's game at home with Fordham, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been put off until Saturday because the Huskies' stadium is being used for hurricane relief efforts.

  • As always, I'll be picking the games of interest each week. Last year, I finished 106-59, but only 2-13 on my upset specials. My upset special is a team that I am picking to win outright that is at least a TD underdog.

    Bowl Projections

    August 24

Again this season, there are 35 bowls, which means 70 teams are required to fill all the spots. In this season's initial bowl projections, I have exactly 70. I also have Oklahoma and Alabama playing for the title - agreeing with the preseason polls, which is unusual for me.

The pick that will probably cause the most emails questioning my sanity is Michigan in the BCS. They are my pick for a surprise team this year. The thing about the Wolverines the last few years is that talent wasn't the problem. That talent is now being coached, and maybe they're really a year away from competing for a BCS spot, but we'll see.

One more poll note: It could be shaping up to be a rough year in the Big East again. Only West Virginia cracked either top 25, and only Pitt and USF even received votes in one of the polls.

    Polls Out

    August 22

Both preseason polls are now out. The AP poll was released on Sunday, while the coaches came out with theirs a couple weeks earlier. There is remarkably little dissent between the two.

The top four teams are the same in each poll, despite #1 Oklahoma losing a key player, LB Travis Lewis, for at least the first month of the season. The next three teams in the each poll are the same, but in a different order, and the vote totals are pretty close.

There isn't any significant dissent until you get to Georgia, which is 19th in the AP poll, but 23rd in the coaches' poll.

The AP had West Virginia and USC in their top 25. The coaches went with Texas, which was 26th in the AP poll, and Penn St. The coaches cannot vote for USC.

I posted a preseason ratings chart. The AP is a placeholder for the Harris poll until it is published, typically the week before the first official BCS. I remove USC from the AP rankings and estimate what the vote totals would be without them. The Trojans are the only team this season that is not bowl-eligible. So far.

Coming up later this week, I'll post the list of coaches voting this year, and my preseason bowl projections.
